That physical preparation addresses numerous components that are critical to athletic success, including strength, speed, power, agility, flexibility, metabolic conditioning, and motivation. The Maine strength and conditioning staff tailors a strength and conditioning program that matches the student-athlete's individual needs in conjunction with sport-specific demands.
The Intercollegiate Athletic Strength & Conditioning facility, located in the Latti Fitness Center next to Wallace Pool in Memorial Gymnasium, is a top-of-the-line facility. It is over 5,000 square feet, including a warm-up area. Included in the facility are 10 multi-purpose power racks, dumb bells ranging from 5-to-150 pounds, and several rehabilitation based machines. The Mahaney Dome is also a vital facility to the Maine strength and conditioning department. The Dome, which is located just outside of the Strength Center, is utilized for both speed and plyometic training.
The Maine strength and conditioning staff moved its Intercollegiate Athletic Strength & Conditioning center into Latti in August of 2007, just prior to the start of the 2007-08 athletic season. The Mahaney Dome broke ground on Sept. 14, 2005, and was ready for use a few months later in the winter of 2006. The facility is named after the late Larry Mahaney, who donated $1 million required to construct the dome.
