The Sports Medicine Team consists of certified athletic trainers, team physicians, consulting physicians and other allied healthcare professionals. The team works together to prevent, manage and rehabilitate all injured student-athletes.
A Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) is a highly educated and skilled professional specializing in sports medicine. Under the direction of the team physician and in cooperation with consulting physicians and other allied healthcare providers, the athletic trainer functions as an integral member of the Sports Medicine Team. All University of Maine certified athletic trainers are certified by and members of the National Athletic Trainers Association.

This award is presented annually by Mark "Rookie" Letendre, Director of Umpire Medical Services for Major League Baseball, to the outstanding student athletic trainer of the year who best reflects the ideals, dedication, loyalty and commitment to the profession of Athletic Training and the University of Maine.

The Athletic Training Department holds an annual golf tournament to raise funds for the department. This year the tournament will be held on Friday, June 6, 2008 at Hermon Meadows Golf Course. Sponsors of the tournament include: First MRI and Healthworks.
