Feb. 3, 2005 ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine announced today that 226 student-athletes will be honored for their academic achievements. These are students who have achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or better. The total of 226 honorees is the largest in the history of the program, surpassing the previous high of 218 set last year. This group represents over 50% of the students who participate in Intercollegiate Athletics at the University. To qualify the student-athletes must be upper classmen who have achieved over a 3.0 or better for the 2004 year and/or have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better. First- year student-athletes are honored for earning a 3.0 or better in their first semester at Maine. "This is a significant individual and program accomplishment" said Maine Athletic Director Patrick Nero. "As individuals they have shown great ability to manage their lives and priorities in order to achieve success as both students and athletes. As a program, it sends a message that academic achievement is very important to all of our student-athletes, coaches and administration." The student-athletes represent all 19 of Maine's teams, and all six of the University of Maine's colleges, including the Honors College. Ten teams have grade point averages of 3.0 or better. Women's Cross Country and Track has the most honorees with 22, followed by women's swimming and diving with 18. The University of Maine Athletic Department will honor these scholar-athletes at a reception on Sunday in Wells Common at 10:30 a.m. In addition, all scholar-athletes will be recognized at halftime of the men's basketball game against Binghamton, which begins at noon. Also on Sunday, the annual winners of the "M" Club Dean Smith Awards, presented to the top male and female scholar-athletes will be announced at the reception. The event is sponsored by the University of Maine Alumni Association, The "M" Club, and the University of Maine Foundation. All scholar-athletes will receive a medallion, the color of which represents the number of years that a recipient has earned the award. This year 84 student-athletes will receive bronze medals for their first time award, 54 will receive silver medals for their second time award, and 32 will receive gold medals for the third time award. Four student-athletes will receive double gold medals for their fourth time award. In addition, this year 56 first-year student-athletes will be honored as "Rising Stars" for earning a 3.0 or better in their first semester at Maine.
