ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine announced today that 239 student-athletes will be honored for their academic achievements. These are students who have achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or better. The total of 239 honorees is the largest in the history of the program, surpassing the previous high of 226 set last year. This group represents over 50% of the students who participate in Intercollegiate Athletics at the University.

To qualify the student-athletes must be upper classmen who have achieved over a 3.0 or better for the 2005 year and/or have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better. First- year student-athletes are honored for earning a 3.0 or better in their first semester at Maine. This marks the 17th year for the Scholar-Athlete Awards, as over 1,790 student-athletes have been honored since the inception of the awards in 1989.

"University of Maine athletics prides itself on academic and athletic success," said Maine Interim Athletic Director Blake James. "This group exemplifies what it means to be student athletes. They have excelled academically while competing at the highest level athletically. Everyone involved with Maine athletics recognizes and truly appreciates the accomplishment of these individuals."

The student-athletes represent all 19 of Maine's teams, and all six of the University of Maine's colleges, including the Honors College. Eleven teams have grade point averages of 3.0 or better. Women's Cross Country and Track has the most honorees with 32, followed by women's swimming and diving with 29.

The University of Maine Athletic Department will honor these scholar-athletes at a reception on Sunday in Memorial Gym at 11:30 am. In addition, all scholar-athletes will be recognized at halftime of the men's basketball game against New Hampshire, which begins at 1:00 pm. Also on Sunday, the annual winners of the "M" Club Dean Smith Awards, presented to the top male and female scholar-athletes will be announced at the reception. The event is sponsored by the University of Maine Alumni Association, The "M" Club, and the University of Maine Foundation.

All scholar-athletes will receive a medallion, the color of which represents the number of years that a recipient has earned the award. This year 73 student-athletes will receive bronze medals for their first time award, 56 will receive silver medals for their second time award, and 43 will receive gold medals for the third time award. Four student-athletes will receive double gold medals for their fourth time award. In addition, this year 63 first-year student-athletes will be honored as "Rising Stars" for earning a 3.0 or better in their first semester at Maine.
