Brittany Cheney, Kirby Davis and Jason Jacobe Honored With Dean Smith Award

ORONO, Maine- The University of Maine announced today that Brittany Cheney, Kirby Davis and Jason Jacobe are the 2006 recipients of the M Club Dean Smith Award. The award is presented to the male and female student-athlete with outstanding academic and athletic achievement along with citizenship and community service.

Brittany Cheney (Abington, Mass.) is a senior shortstop on the softball team. She was named to the All-America East first team in 2005 as she led the team with a .317 batting average. In 2004 she earned All-America East first team honors with a .301 batting average as the team won the conference championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. As a freshman in 2003, she was named to the America East All-Rookie team and second team all-conference. Cheney is a Maine Scholar-Athlete gold medalist and is majoring in psychology.

Kirby Davis (Falmouth, Maine) is a junior on the men's cross country and track teams. He became the first Black Bear to win the America East cross country individual championship in 2005. This weekend he finished fifth overall in the 5000 meters at the America East Indoor Track Championships. He was named to the America East All-Academic team for cross country in 2005. Davis is a Maine Scholar-Athlete silver medalist majoring in civil engineering.

Jason Jacobe (Windham, Maine) is a junior on the men's soccer team. He has stared every game the last two seasons at back and has been named captain of the team for the 2006 season. He scored one goal and two assists in 2005. In 2004, he was named to CoSIDA Academic All-District Team. Jacobe is a Maine Scholar-Athlete gold medalist majoring in mechanical engineering.

The Dean Smith Award was first presented as the M Club Scholarship Award in 1980. The award was renamed to honor Dean Smith in 1993. Dean Smith was a recipient of the Walter Byers Award presented by the NCAA. Smith combined the top grade-point average among senior electrical engineering majors with the NAC scoring title as the captain of the 1989-90 men's basketball team.
