Men's Ice Hockey
ORONO, Maine- The University of Maine announced on Sunday that Erin Reusch (Salem, N.H.), Laura Harper (Nepean, Ontario) and Travis Ramsey (Lakewood, Calif.) are the 2008 recipients of the M Club Dean Smith Award. The award is presented to the male and female student-athlete with outstanding academic and athletic achievement along with citizenship and community service.
Erin Reusch has posted a perfect 4.0 grade point average for the past six consecutive semesters with 3.98 cumulative grade point average. She was captain of the field hockey team in 2007. She saw action in 71 career games with three goals and five assists for 11 points. This past season she was named to the America East Second Team and also earned a spot on the America East All-Academic Team. She has been named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association National Academic squad three times. She has been named to the America East Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll and is also a three-time UMaine Scholar-Athlete Award winner. Reusch is a kinesiology and physical education major / health fitness major.
Laura Harper was a four-year standout and tri-captain this past season of the women's soccer team. She played in 74 career games and scored 25 goals and added eight assists for 58 career points, which is tied for second on Maine's all-time scoring list. Harper has received numerous on the field honors. She was named to the America East First Team in both 2006 and 2007. She also was named to the America East All-Academic Team in each of those seasons. In 2006, she was named to the NSCAA/adidas NCAA Division I Women's Northeast All-Region Second Team. She was also named a 2006 ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA All-District First Team selection and was a Second Team selection in 2005. In 2006, she led America East in goals, goals per game, points and points per game. She has been named to the America East Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll and is a three-time UMaine Scholar-Athlete Award winner. Harper is a biochemistry major.
Travis Ramsey is captain of the men's ice hockey team, which has competed in each of the past two Frozen Fours. A defensive defenseman, Ramsey has seen action in 122 career games with three goals and 19 assists for 22 points. He has played in 117 consecutive games, the longest streak on the Maine team. This season, he was named an official candidate for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, which honors senior student-athletes for their commitment to the classroom, community, character and competition. He is one of just 20 national candidates for the Lower's Senior CLASS Award and one of just two from Hockey East. He is a member of Lambda Pi Eta, the official communication studies honor society of the National Communication Association. Ramsey has been named to the Hockey East All-Academic Team and is also a three-time UMaine Scholar-Athlete Award winner. He is a communications major with double minor in public relations and business administration.
The M Club Dean Smith Award was first presented as the M Club Scholarship Award in 1980. The award was renamed to honor Dean Smith in 1993. Dean Smith was a recipient of the Walter Byers Award presented by the NCAA. Smith combined the top grade-point average among senior electrical engineering majors with the NAC scoring title as the captain of the 1989-90 men's basketball team.
In addition, the University of Maine Athletic Department named its second annual "Team Maine" representing the top sophomore, junior or senior achieving the highest grade point average for the calendar year 2007. Representing "Team Maine" 2007 are:
