A new state-of-the-art strength and conditioning center will be a highlight of the Alfond improvements. Complete with free weights, treadmills, stationary bikes, and Nautilus equipment, the spacious center will accommodate today’s needs for the physical training demands of our student-athletes.
The men’s and women’s Black Bear hockey programs will each have one of the top locker room facilities in the country. Each student-athlete will have a large individual locker and changing area to prepare for practices and games. The suites will be equipped with modern video viewing capabilities with large screen projection monitors.
This high traffic area will honor individual and team awards and accomplishments. The Hall of Fame will also combine Bear Necessities, Maine’s souvenir store, and the Ticket Office. The area will honor the many accomplishments of the individuals and teams that are part of Maine history.
A modern athletic training room to provide the best preventive and rehabilitation treatment is a key addition to the Shawn Walsh Center. The training room will be located on the lower level of the facility, adjacent to the locker rooms and the new strength and conditioning center.
The Shawn Walsh Hockey Center will include an area where student-athletes will be able to study after classes and before practice or relax before games. This space will also serve as a team meeting area.
Designed to be both functional and inviting, guests will be welcomed to the men’s and women’s office suite through a central reception area. The hub of all hockey office activity will provide visitors with a waiting area and the staff with centralized support services.
Office space for the coaching staff will have access to a central reception area for the Shawn Walsh Hockey Center. The area will serve a key recruiting role while also providing space for meetings with key supporters of the program.
The Athletic Ticket Office will be refurbished allowing fans to come inside and purchase tickets. The space will be altered to handle increased demands of the office.
A full-service athletic equipment area will maintain the Black Bear hockey programs’ uniforms, sticks and hockey gear. Laundry machines and equipment storage areas will be conveniently located near locker rooms.
Coaches’ locker rooms conveniently located to team locker rooms as well as the office suite will allow our coaches to better meet the demanding time restrictions and various responsibilities they face each day.
The concession area will be moved to a new location creating space for the Hall of Fame and Athletic store. The new concession location, with an exterior wall, will provided an expanded menu selection and faster service.
This locker room will be refurbished to host all visiting teams at Alfond Arena.
This new meeting area located near the coaches’ offices will be a comfortable area for coaches to meet with each other or greet recruits.
This space will be refurbished to make use of the previous women’s ice hockey coaches’ offices. The arena manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations of Alfond Arena.
Similar to the current hallway that honors former Black Bears that competed in the NHL, this is the area that Maine student-athletes will walk through for every practice and game.
These areas will be utilized by visiting teams and youth hockey players in order to keep varsity locker rooms in top condition. Support of this space will be a great way to support Maine hockey and the local hockey community.
This space will be used to store player sticks in the locker room. Hockey players will use the area on a daily basis.
This space will adjoin training, fitness, and locker areas. The area can also be used to honor current and former Black Bears.
