Baseball Falls to Mt. Saint Mary's in Season-Opener
Feb. 28, 2005 BRADENTON, Fla.- Eric Smith hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Mt. Saint Mary's a 7-5 win over the University of Maine in the season-opener for the Black Bears on Monday morning in Bradenton, Fla. Mt. Saint Mary's, playing its second game of the season, improves to 1-1 on the campaign. Maine jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Mike Ferriggi (Bellmore, N.Y.) led off the inning with a double to right field. Joe Hough (West Roxbury, Mass.) drove home Ferriggi with a single to left field. Hough stole second base and advanced to third when Aaron Izaryk (Markham, Ontario) singled to right field. Hough scored when Joel Barrett (Brewer, Maine) hit a sacrifice fly. Curt Smith (Curacao, Netherlands) drove home Izaryk with a single. The Mountaineers answered with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 4-3 lead. Smith, Adam Schlenoff, Josh Vittek and Steve Fay all crossed the plate for Mt. St. Mary's. The Black Bears tied the game in the top of the fifth. Izaryk walked and scored when Smith reached on an error. Mt. St. Mary's regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth when Fay scored his second run of the game. He singled to lead off the inning and scored when Jim Serafin singled to left field. Maine tied the game in the top of the seventh. Izaryk led off the inning with a double to center field. Barrett drove home Izaryk with a double to right field to knot the game. For Izaryk, it was his third run of the game. The game remained tied until Mt. Saint Mary's Smith hit the two-run game-winning home run. Steve Richard (Billerica, Mass.) pitched six innings for the Black Bears, allowing five runs. Ryan Brown (Milford, Maine) pitched the final 2.3 innings and allowed two runs on three hits. Izaryk went 2-for-3 with three runs scored for the Black Bears. Barrett had three hits and drove in two for Maine. The Black Bears return to action when they face Seton Hall on Tuesday, March 1 at 2:30 p.m. at IMG Complex in Bradenton, Fla.
