Baseball Defeats Penn in Season-Opener
March 3, 2007 The University of Maine baseball team defeated Penn 14-7 on Saturday afternoon in the season-opener in Palm Beach, Fla. The Black Bears scored five runs in the second inning and never looked back. The game featured the return of Maine pitcher Greg Norton (South Portland, Maine) who sat out the 2006 season as a medical redshirt. Norton went six innings allowing just six hits while striking out three to earn the victory. Maine scored five runs in the second inning. Matt McGraw (Burlington, Ontario) had a two-run triple, while Billy Cather (Worcester, Mass.) had an RBI single. Maine added to its lead with five more runs in the top of the seventh inning. Sean Parker (Worcester, Mass.) led off the inning with a home run. Mark Ostrander (Hopkinton, Mass.) doubled, while Danny Menendez (Miami, Fla.) drew a walk. Billy Cather reached on an error, while McGraw singled. The Black Bears added a pair of runs in both the eighth and ninth innings to earn the victory. Norton went six innings for Maine. Brad Hertzler (Westport, Mass.) pitched the seventh, Chris Wojick (Uncasville, Conn.) the eighth and Pat Moran (Winterport, Maine) the ninth.
Menendez finished the game 3-for-4 with a double, while Parker was 3-for-5 with a home run. Myckie Lugbauer (Mahopac, N.Y.) was 1-for-1 with a home run. The Black Bears return to action on Sunday, March 4 when they face Villanova at 2:30 p.m. U-M- |
