Maine Baseball Downs St. Bonaventure 7-1
March 6, 2006 PALM BEACH, Fla.-- The University of Maine baseball team scored four runs in the fourth inning and went on to defeat St. Bonaventure 7-1 on Monday afternoon in Palm Beach, Fla. The Black Bears improve to 1-4 on the season, while St. Bonaventure falls to 0-2. Curt Smith (Willemstad, Curacao) and Frank Pesanello (Plainville, Mass.) each had two RBI for the Black Bears in the fourth inning. St. Bonaventure jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. T.J. Pennino singled to shortstop and advanced to second when Kieran Malone was hit by a pitch. Tristan Mulcahy singled to right center field scoring Pennino. Maine answered with four runs in the fourth inning to take the lead. Mark Ostrander (Hopkinton, Mass.) led off the inning with a single up the middle and Joel Barrett (Brewer, Maine) followed with a walk. Smith tripled down the right field line scoring both Ostrander and Barrett. Pesanello followed with a home run to right field driving in Smith to give the Black Bears the 4-1 lead. Maine added a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Joel Barrett had a two-run single scoring both Kevin McAvoy (Brewer, Maine) and Joe Hough (West Roxbury, Mass.). The Black Bears added a run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Smith led off with a single to left field and followed with a stolen base. He reached third on an error and scored when Danny Menendez (Miami, Fla.) singled to center field. Nolan Boike (Arlington, Mass.) pitched six innings for Maine and allowed one run on six hits while striking out one. He earns the win and improves to 1-0 on the season. Scott Robinson (Ajax, Ontario) pitched the final three innings for Maine and did not allow a hit. He fanned four of the nine batters that he faced. Robinson earns the save in the game. The save was the 16th of his career tying him for third place on the all-time saves list at Maine with Marc Powers (1984-87).
Smith led Maine as he was 2-for-4 with two run scored and two RBI. He hit his second triple in as many games. Danny Menendez also had a pair of hits for Maine, while Barrett and Pesanello also both drove in a pair of runs. The Black Bears return to action on Tuesday, March 7 when they face St. Bonaventure in Palm Beach, Fla. at 12:00 noon. The game can be heard live on WZON AM 620.
