Moran Leads Maine Past St. Bonaventure

PALM BEACH, Fla.-- Pat Moran (Hampden, Maine) pitched six strong innings, while Joe Hough (West Roxbury, Mass.) had three hits with a pair of runs scored and two RBI to lead the Maine baseball team past St. Bonaventure 14-10 on Tuesday afternoon in Palm Beach, Fla. The Black Bears improve to 2-4 on the season, while the Bonnies fall to 0-3 on the campaign. Hough led off the game with a home run, the first of the year for the senior captain. Matt McGraw (Burlington, Ontario) and Ryan Quintal (Manchester, N.H.) each followed with walks. Curt Smith (Willemstad, Curacao) singled to through the right side scoring McGraw and Quintal scored when Frank Pesanello (Plainville, Mass.) hit a sacrifice fly to left field. Maine added to its lead with three more runs in the third inning. Quintal reached on a fielder's choice and stole second base. Pesanello drove him home with an RBI single. Rivera followed with a triple, the first of his career, scoring Pesanello. Pesanello scored when Billy Cather (Worcester, Mass.) singled to left field. St. Bonaventure answered with a three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Tristan Mulcahy had an RBI triple, while Josh Perkins added an RBI single for the Bonnies. Brian Pellegrini knocked in Randy Moley when he reached on a fielder's choice. The Black Bears added six runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 12-3 lead. Rivera led off the inning with a single through the left side. Cather single to left field and Kevin McAvoy (Brewer, Maine) singled scoring Rivera. Hough followed with a single to left field scoring Cather. Barrett followed with a single through the left side scoring McAvoy. Quintal reached on an error and Hough scored. Curt Smith drove home Barrett when he doubled to right field. Cather drew a bases loaded walk scoring Quintal with the sixth run of the inning for the Black Bears.
Maine added a run in the sixth inning when Barrett tripled to right field, his second triple in the past three games, and scored when Quintal reached on an error. The Bonnies answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Maine got the run back in the top of the eighth. Bobby Brown (Chelmsford, Mass.) doubled down the right field line and scored when McGraw singled to left field. St. Bonaventure made the game close late with five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Matt Agostinelli had the big hit for the Bonnies in the game when he had a two-run double down the right field line scoring Matt Mardeusz and Kieran Malone. The Bonnies added a single run in the bottom of the ninth inning to make it a 14-10 game. Moran went six innings for Maine and allowed four runs on six hits. He fanned three batters and did not walk anyone. He picks up his first collegiate win and improves to 1-1 on the season. Jose Mendoza (Miami, Fla.) pitched two innings and allowed five runs on six hits with one strikeout. Mitch Clegg (Woburn, Mass.) pitched the final inning for Maine and fanned two batters. St. Bonaventure used five pitchers in the game. Brian Hardner got the start and lasted 3.2 innings. He allowed six runs on eight hits and picks up the loss. Hough was 3-for-6 with two runs and two RBI, while Smith finished the day 3-for-5 with two RBI as well. Rivera was 3-for-5 with two runs scored one RBI. Quintal scored a game-high three runs. The Black Bears return to action on Wednesday, March 8 when they face Monmouth in Boca Raton, Fla. at 1:00 p.m. The game can be heard live on WZON AM 620.
