Baseball Falls to Monmouth in 10th Inning
March 8, 2006 BOCA RATON, Fla.--Monmouth's Marc Weres hit a walk-off three-run home run in the bottom of the 10th inning to lead the Monmouth baseball team past the University of Maine 6-3 on Wednesday afternoon in Boca Raton, Fla. Maine falls to 2-5 on the season, while Monmouth improves to 2-6 on the year. The Black Bears opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. Joe Hough (West Roxbury, Mass.) led off the game with a base hit to left field. Billy Cather (Worcester, Mass.) singled to right field and Matt McGraw (Burlington, Ontario) followed with a bunt single to load the bases. Curt Smith (Willemstad, Curacao) hit a sacrifice fly scoring Hough to give Maine the 1-0 lead. Monmouth tied the game in the bottom of the second inning when Weres scored on an error. Maine took the lead back in the top of the third inning. Hough walked and scored when McGraw grounded out to third base. The Hawks tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning when Andy Meyers hit a solo home run. Monmouth took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning. Nick Massari led off the inning when a triple down the right field line and scored when Patrick Sullivan had an RBI bunt single. The Black Bears tie the game in the top of the ninth inning to force extra innings. Bobby Brown (Chelmsford, Mass.) led off the inning with a single to right field. Kevin McAvoy (Brewer, Maine) singled to third base and Brown advanced to third. Danny Menendez (Miami, Fla.) drove home Brown with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 3-3 before the Hawks won it in the 10th inning on the walk-off home run.
Josh Zyskowski (Grand Rapids, Mich.) started the game for Maine and pitched well. He went 7.1 innings and scattered eight hits. He allowed three runs, two of which were earned, while striking out seven batters. Jason Weymouth (Charleston, Maine) and John Tesseyman (High Falls, N.Y.) each pitched a third of an inning and neither allowed a hit. A.J. Balsinde (Miami, Fla.) pitched the final 1.2 innings for Maine and picks up the loss. He falls to 0-1 on the season. Joe Cummings went 8.0 innings for Monmouth and allowed two runs on seven hits. Kevin Schneider pitched 1.1 innings and allowed one run on five hits. Matt Marc-Aurele pitched the final 0.2 inning to earn the victory. He improves to 1-0 on the season. Hough led Maine at the plate as he was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. McGraw was 3-for-5 with a run scored, while Joel Barrett (Brewer, Maine) chipped in with a pair of hits.
