Maine Baseball Cruises Past Monmouth 14-7

LAKEWORTH, Fla. -- The University of Maine baseball team tied a school record with five triples as it downed Monmouth 14-7 on Wednesday night in Lakeworth, Fla. Maine improves to 3-2 on the season with the victory. Monmouth jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Black Bears answered with five runs in the bottom of the second inning. Four different Black Bears had an RBI in the inning. Danny Menendez (Miami, Fla.) hit the first of five Maine triples in the inning. Maine added five more runs in the bottom of the third inning. Mark Ostrander (Hopkinton, Mass.) had the big hit for the Black Bears as he had a three-run triple. Matt McGraw (Burlington, Ontario) also tripled in the inning. Monmouth pulled to within four runs at 10-6 in the top of the fourth inning, but Maine responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Joel Barrett (Brewer, Maine) doubled and Kevin McAvoy (Brewer, Maine) followed with an RBI triples. McAvoy scored when Parker hit a sacrifice fly. Sean Parker (Worcester, Mass.) and Kevin Jackson (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) both doubled in the bottom of the sixth inning as Maine plated its 13th run of the game. The Black Bears added a final run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Barrett singled and Myckie Lugbauer (Mahopac, N.Y.) hit Maine's fifth triple of the game to score Barrett. Six different Black Bears had two or more hits in the game. Barrett finished 3-for-4 with four runs scored. Ostrander was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and four RBI. Lugbauer was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI.
Nolan Boike (Arlington, Mass.) went five innings for Maine and allowed six runs, just two of which were earned, on seven hits. He fanned eight batters in the game. Boike picks up the win and improves to 1-0 on the season. Mike Powers (Portland, Maine) went two innings and allowed two hits while striking out five. Will Carroll (Boothbay, Maine) pitched a scoreless inning for the Black Bears. David Ricker (Hendersonville, N.C.) made his collegiate debut and allowed one runs on one hit. Maine returns to action on Thursday, March 8 when it faces Penn at 1:00 pm in Palm Beach, Fla. The game can be heard live on WZON, AM 620. -U-M- |
