LANTANA, Fla.-- Kevin McAvoy (Brewer, Maine) and Ryan Quintal (Manchester, N.H.) each hit three-run doubles to lead the University of Maine baseball team past Penn 10-5 on Thursday night in Lantana, Fla. Scott Robinson (Ajax, Ontario) pitched seven strong innings for Maine to earn the victory. The Black Bears improves to 3-5 on the season, while the Quakers fall to 0-6.

Maine opened the scoring with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Matt McGraw (Burlington, Ontario) walked and Joel Barrett (Brewer, Maine) singled to left field. Ryan Quintal also singled to left field to load the bases. McGraw scored the first run of the game for the Black Bears on a wild pitch and Barrett and Quintal each advanced a base. Curt Smith (Willemstad, Curacao) walked to load the bases once again. Kevin McAvoy belted a three-run double to clear the bases and give Maine the 4-0 lead.

Penn answered with a run in the top of the second inning. Tony Moses singled up the middle and scored when Tim May reached on a fielder's choice.

Joe Hough (West Roxbury, Mass.) tripled in the bottom of the fifth inning. For Hough, it was his 11th career triple, tying him with Chad White (1990-93) for the Maine record for career triples. McGraw followed with a walk and Barrett singled to center field scoring Hough.

The Quakers scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to pull to within one run. Josh Corn led off the inning with a single to center field. Kyle Armeny followed with a single to center. Tim May singled down the left field line scoring Corn. Jim Farrell followed with a single to right field scoring Armeny. May scored the third run of the inning for the Quakers on a balk.

 

 

Maine scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Bobby Brown (Chelmsford, Mass.) reached on an error to lead off the inning. Kevin McAvoy followed with a singled to left field and Sean Parker (Worcester, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice. Danny Menendez (Miami, Fla.) singled scoring McAvoy. Hough followed with a single to right field which plated Parker. McGraw was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Quintal followed with a three-run double, clearing the bases, to give Maine a 10-4 lead.

Penn added a run in the top of the ninth inning. Tony Moses walked to lead off the inning and scored when Armeny doubled.

Scott Robinson got the start for Maine and went seven innings. He allowed four runs on nine hits while striking out seven batters. Robinson picks up the win and improves to 1-1 on the season. Jason Weymouth (Charleston, Maine) relieved Robinson and pitched the final two innings. He allowed one run on one hit while striking out three batters. Weymouth earned the save in the game for the Black Bears.

Brian Cirri pitched 7.1 innings for Penn and allowed nine runs on 10 hits. He walked four batters in the game along with fanning four batters. Bret Wallace relieved him in the eighth inning and pitched 0.2 and allowed one run on one hit.

McAvoy went 3-for-4 for Maine with a run scored and three RBI, while Barrett was 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI.

The Black Bears return to action on Friday, March 10 when they face Penn at 6:00 p.m. in Boca Raton, Fla.
