Baseball Falls to St. Bonaventure

PALM BEACH, Fla.-- The University of Maine baseball team fell to St. Bonaventure 21-7 Friday afternoon in Palm Beach, Fla. The Black Bears fall to 4-3 on the season, while the Bonnies improve to 3-7 on the campaign. Billy Cather (Worcester, Mass.) led the Maine offense with a pair of hits, two runs scored and two RBI, while Mark Ostrander (Hopkinton, Mass.) homered for the Black Bears.

St. Bonaventure jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Josh Perkins reached on a fielder's choice and scored when Brian Pellegrini homered.

The Black Bears were able to get a run back in the bottom of the inning. Billy Cather led off the inning with a single. He then stole second and advanced to third on an error. Curt Smith (Willemstad, Curacao) drove in Cather with a single. Mark Ostrander tied the game in the bottom of the second inning with a home run.

The Bonnies took the lead back in the top of the third inning when Josh Perkins hit a two-run homer to center field. Kevin Suminski hit a two-run double later in the inning giving St. Bonaventure a 6-2 lead. Suminski scored when Tristan Mulcahy singled to center field.

The Bonnies added to their lead when Pellegrini doubled down the left field line scoring Randy Moley in the top of the fourth inning. Joe Rizzo then drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Suminski followed with a two-run triple. He was thrown out at the plate on the play.

St. Bonaventure loaded the bases in the top of the sixth inning with nobody out. Brandon Salerno was hit by a pitch, Moley singled and Perkins walked. Pellegrini followed with a single to left field scoring Salerno. Moley scored when Rizzo hit a sacrifice fly. Perkins crossed the plate when T.J. Pennino hit a sacrifice fly. Pellegrini scored the fourth run of the inning when Mulcahy singled, giving the Bonnies a 14-2 lead.

 

 

St. Bonaventure added four more runs in the top of the seventh inning to take an 18-2 lead.

Maine got on the board again in the bottom of the seventh inning. Ostrander was hit by a pitch. Myckie Lugbauer (Mahopac, N.Y.) followed and was also hit by a pitch. Danny Menendez (Miami, Fla.) drew a walk to load the bases. Cather ripped a double down the right field line scoring both Ostrander and Lugbauer. Tavis Hasenfus (Winthrop, Maine) followed with a single scoring both Menendez and Cather. Brian Hackett (Bangor, Maine) singled to center field and Joel Barrett (Brewer, Maine) reached on an error to load the bases yet again. Kevin McAvoy (Brewer, Maine) singled to center field scoring Hasenfus for Maine's fifth run of the inning.

St. Bonaventure scored two runs in the eighth inning and one more in the ninth.

Greg Norton (South Portland, Maine) went three innings for the Black Bears. He allowed seven runs on seven hits while striking out a pair. He picks up the loss and falls to 1-1 on the season. Ryan Forrest (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) pitched the next three innings. He allowed seven runs on five hits, while striking out two batters. David Ricker (Hendersonville, N.C.) pitched the final three innings for the Black Bears. He allowed seven runs on 10 hits and fanned five.

Michael Proctor pitched seven innings for the Bonnies and picked up the win. He allowed seven runs on seven hits while striking out nine batters.

Maine returns to action on Saturday, March 10 when it faces Northern Illinois at 2:15 pm. The game can be heard live on WZON Radio, AM 620. -U-M-
