PALM BEACH, Fla.-- The University of Maine baseball team dropped a 5-4 decision to Fordham on Sunday afternoon in Palm Beach, Fla. The Black Bears fall to 4-5 on the season. Forham improves to 2-6 on the campaign.

Forham opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. Rich Goulian reached on an error, advanced to second on a sacrifice, to third on a hit by Jordan Lert and scored when John Mollicone reached on a fielder's choice.

The Black Bears tied the game in the bottom of the inning. Billy Cather (Worcester, Mass.) led off the inning with a single to center field. He scored when Barrett singled.

The Rams took the lead back in the top of the second inning. Goulian reached on an error and scored when Eric Reese doubled to left field. Brian Keeney homered to left field in the top of the third innings, givng Fordham a 3-1 lead.

The Black Bears pulled to within one run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Myckie Lugbauer (Mahopac, N.Y.) led off the inning with a double down the right field line. He advanced to third when Danny Menendez (Miami, Fla.) grounded out and scored when Cather hit a sacrifice fly.

Maine tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning. Bobby Brown (Chelmsford, Mass.) doubled and Lugbauer followed with a RBI single.

The Black Bears took their first lead of the game when Barrett belted a long home run in the bottom of the eighth inning. For Barrett, it was his first home run of the season.

Fordham grabbed the lead back in the top of the ninth inning. P.J. Como had a bloop double and Rich Goulian followed with a two-run home run.

Jose Mendoza (Miami, Fla.) started for Maine and went 4.1 innings. He allowed three runs, just one of which was earned, on five hits. Mendoza fanned four batters in the game. Mike Powers (Portland, Maine) relieved Mendoza in the fifth inning. Powers went 4.1 innings and allowed two runs on two hits. Powers fanned seven batters in the game, including five straight at one point. He picks up the loss and falls to 0-2 on the season.

 

 

The Black Bears return to action on Tuesday, March 13 when they face Miami at 7 p.m. in Coral Gables, Fla.
