Maine Baseball Downs IPFW 6-5

BRADENTON, FLA- The University of Maine baseball team defeated IPFW 6-5 on Saturday afternoon in Bradenton, Fla. The Black Bears improve to 6-6 on the season, while IPFW falls to 8-5.

Maine scored two runs in the top of the second inning. Matt McGraw (Burlington, Ontario) led off the inning with a single. Aaron Izaryk (Markham, Ontario) followed with a single. McGraw scored on a passed ball and Izaryk scored when Steve Gambale (Medford, Mass.) singled.

IPFW answered with a run in the bottom of the third inning.

Maine added four runs in the top of the fourth inning. McGraw and Izaryk both walked to start the inning. McGraw scored on a Curt Smith (Curacao, Netherlands) sacrifice fly. Izaryk scored when Joe Hough (West Roxbury, Mass.) reached on an error. Mike Ferriggi (Bellmore, N.Y.) scored when Greg Creek (Manchester, Maine) reached on an error. Joe Barrett (Brewer, Maine) hit an RBI single that scored Hough for the fourth run of the inning.

The Mastadons added a pair of runs in both the fifth and seventh innings.

Greg Norton (South Portland, Maine) pitched 5.1 innings for the Black Bears and allowed three runs on nine hits. He struck out four batters. Norton improves to 2-1 on the season. Ryan Brown (Milford, Maine) pitched .2 innings and allowed just one hit. Nolan Boike (Arlington, Mass.) pitched the final three innings to earn his first save of the season.

The Black Bear return to action when they travel to Monmouth on March 19 for a doubleheader starting at noon.
