Baseball Falls to Long Island University

PALM BEACH, Fla.-- The University of Maine baseball team dropped an 8-2 decision to Long Island University on Wednesday afternoon in Palm Beach, Fla. It was the last of 11 straight games for the Black Bears in the Sunshine State to open the 2007 campaign. Maine falls to 4-7 on the season with the loss, while Long Island University improves to 2-7 on the campaign.

The Black Bears took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. Curt Smith led off with a double. He advanced to second when Joel Barrett (Brewer, Maine) flew out to center field. Smith scored the first run of the game for the Black Bears when Kevin McAvoy (Brewer, Maine) hit a sacrifice fly.

The Black Bears added to their lead in the top of the sixth inning. Barrett reached on an error and scored when McAvoy doubled. For McAvoy, it was his second RBI of the game.

Long Island University took a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Trey Bell led off the inning with a double to left center field. Robbie Rowan followed with a single to right field plating Bell. James Jones gave the Blackbirds a 3-2 lead with a two-run homer to right field. Greg DeSantis drove in Frank DiMasi, who had doubled, with an RBI single. Danny Etkin scored the fifth run of the inning when Dan Pirillo layed down a bunt.

The Blackbirds added to their lead in the bottom of the seventh inning. Bell doubled to left field, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Rowan and scored when Orlando Cruz singled to left field. James Jones, who reached on a fielder's choice, scored the seventh run of the game on a double steal.

The Blackbirds scored a run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Greg DeSantis singled through the right side, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single up the middle by Trey Bell.

Mitch Clegg (Woburn, Mass.) went 5.1 innings for Maine and allowed four runs on eight hits. He struck out three batters and falls to 1-1 on the season. Will Carroll (Boothbay, Maine) went one inning in relief and allowed two runs on two hits. Alejandro Balsinde (Miami, Fla.) pitched the final 1.2 innings for the Black Bears and allowed two runs on five hits while striking out a pair.

 

 

The Black Bears travel to Arizona State University for a four-game set with the Sun Devils beginning on Friday, March 16 at 9 p.m. The game can be heard on The Sports Zone, AM 620.
