Quintal Leads Maine Past LIU

LANTANA, Fla.-- The University of Maine baseball team defeated LIU 10-6 on Wednesday night in Lantana, Fla. Ryan Quintal (Manchester, N.H.) led Maine as he went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a triple and four RBI. The Black Bears improve to 7-6 on the season, while LIU falls to 1-6-1. Maine opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning. Matt McGraw (Manchester, N.H.) reached on a fielder's choice and scored when Ryan Quintal doubled. LIU scored a run in the bottom of the first inning and two in the bottom of the second inning. McGraw pulled Maine to within one run when he crossed the plate for the second time in the game in the top of the third inning. The Black Bears tied the game when Sean Parker (Worcester, Mass.) scored in the top of the fourth inning. The game was tied 3-3 headed into the seventh inning when Maine was able to score seven runs. Danny Menendez (Miami, Fla.) started the rally with a one-out single. Parker doubled scoring Menendez. Billy Cather (Worcester, Mass.) walked and Joe Hough (West Roxbury, Mass.) and McGraw followed with singles. Ryan Quintal had a big two-out three-run triple for the Black Bears in the inning. LIU scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth and one in the bottom of the ninth to make it a 10-6 final.
Nolan Boike (Arlington, Mass.) pitched 7.1 innings for Maine and allowed four runs, one of which was earned, on seven hits. He fanned two batters and improves to 2-0 on the season. Will Carroll (Boothbay, Maine) pitched the final 1.2 innings for Maine and allowed two runs on three hits while striking out a pair. Maine returns to action on Thursday, March 16 when its plays Iona at 1:00 p.m. in Palm Beach, Fla.
