Maine Baseball Defeats, Ties Delaware State University

DOVER, Del.-- The University of Maine baseball team defeated Delaware State University 12-5 in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon before recording a 3-3 tie with the Hornets in the second game. The Black Bears improve to 14-9-1 on the season, while Delaware State falls to 9-18-2. The game was the first tie for the Black Bears since a 9-9 tie against Rhode Island during the 1992 season.

In the first game, Maine jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Matt McGraw (Burlington, Ontario) singled through the left side. Joel Barrett (Brewer, Maine) doubled down the left field line and McGraw advanced to third. He scored when Ryan Quintal (Manchester, N.H.) hit a sacrifice fly.

Maine added to its lead with four runs in the top of the third inning. Quintal belted a three-run home run in the inning, while Barrett added a sacrifice fly. The Black Bears added a run in the fourth inning on a RBI single by McGraw. Maine built its lead to 9-0 in the top of the fifth inning when Kevin McAvoy (Brewer, Maine) hit a three-run home run to left field.

Delaware State got on the board with three runs in the fifth inning, but Maine answered back with two in the top of the sixth. Quintal had a RBI single, while Curt Smith (Willemstad, Curacao) had a RBI double. The Black Bears added a run in the top of the eighth when Barrett doubled to left field and scored when Smith singled to center.

The Hornets added a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to make it a 12-5 final.

Nolan Boike (Arlington, Mass.) went four innings for Maine and allowed just one hit. He allowed three runs, one of which was earned, and struck out four. He improves to 4-0 on the season. Troy Martin (Dover, N.H.) pitched four innings in relief for the Black Bears and allowed two runs on three hits while striking out two. A.J. Balsinde (Miami, Fla.) pitched the final inning for the Black Bears. He fanned a pair of batters without allowing a hit.

 

 

In the second game, the two teams battled to a 3-3 tie. Maine got on the scoreboard first with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Danny Menendez (Miami, Fla.) singled to shortstop. Billy Cather (Worcester, Mass.) singled to right field and Menendez advanced to third and scored on a Matt McGraw sacrifice fly. Cather stole second base and scored when Barrett singled through the left side.

DSU cut the Maine lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning. Maine answered with a run in the top of the seventh inning when Cather singled to left field. He stole second and advanced to third on an error. He scored when McGraw reached on an error.

Delaware State University scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game at 3-3.

Josh Zyskowski (Grand Rapids, Mich.) pitched 5.0 innings for Maine and allowed one run on three hits while striking out four. Scott Robinson (Ajax, Ontario) pitched 1.1 inning and allowed two runs on four hits. Balsinde pitched the final 1.2 innings and allowed just one hit while striking out two.

The Black Bears return to action on Wednesday, April 5 when they travel to UMass for a 3:00 p.m. game with the Minutemen.
