BROOKLINE, Mass.-- The University of Maine baseball team defeated Vermont 5-2 on Sunday afternoon at Northeastern's Friedman Diamond. The Black Bears improve to 11-8 on the season with the win and have won five of their last six games. Vermont falls to 7-6-1 on the campaign.

Maine jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Joe Hough (West Roxbury, Mass.) led off the game with a bunt single. Aaron Izaryk (Markham, Ontario) reached on a fielder's choice. Joel Barrett (Brewer, Maine) hit an RBI double scoring Izaryk.

Vermont answered in the bottom of the inning with a run. Jason Carey led off for the Catamounts and reached on an error. He advanced to second when Jim Chapman grounded out and scored when Miguel Magrass singled to center field. The Catamounts took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Kyle Brault singled and stole second. He scored when Ben Schumacher grounded into a double play.

It did not take Maine long to answer back. The Black Bears took the lead for good in the top of the fifth inning. Mike Ferriggi (Bellmore, N.Y.) led off the inning with a double to center field. Steve Gambale (Medford, Mass.) followed with a walk. Hough advanced both base runners with a sacrifice bunt. Izaryk singled scoring Ferriggi. Barrett followed with a walk that loaded the bases. Creek hit an RBI single to left field scoring Gambale.

Maine added a run in the top of the sixth inning. Ross Cantara (Biddeford, Maine) singled to left field. Ryan Quintal (Manchester, N.H.) followed with a double to center field. Gambale singled to center scoring Cantara.

 

 

Maine added an additional run in the top of the eighth inning. Quintal hit his second double of the game. Ferriggi walked and Gambale singled to load the bases. Hough followed with an RBI single to give the Black Bears the 5-2 lead.

Greg Norton (South Portland, Maine) pitched seven innings for the Black Bears, allowing two runs, only one of which was earned, on three hits. He improves to 4-1 on the season. Troy Martin (Dover, N.H.) pitched the final two innings to earn his team-leading third save of the season.

Chris Blazek pitched 4.1 innigs for the Catamounts and picks up the loss. He allowed three runs on five hits. He falls to 0-2 on the season. Brandon Miles pitched the final 4.2 for Vermont and allowed two runs on six hits.

The Black Bears return to action on Wednesday, April 6 when they travel to Central Connecticut State University for a pair of games starting at 1:00 p.m.
