Maine and NYIT Finish in 0-0 Tie

BANGOR, Maine -- The University of Maine baseball team played to a scoreless tie with New York Institute of Technology on Friday afternoon at Husson College in Bangor, Maine. The game was called and ruled an official tie after five innings due to rain. Maine moves to 7-13-1 on the season, while NYIT moves to 6-9-1. Maine loaded the bases in the bottom of the first inning. Kevin Jackson (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) singled up the middle and advanced to second when Curt Smith (Willemstad, Curacao) walked. The runners advanced to second and third when Myckie Lugbauer (Mahopac, N.Y.) grounded out. Kevin McAvoy (Brewer, Maine) walked to load the bases, but the Black Bears were unable to push a run across. NYIT threatened in the top of the third inning. Julian Richards singled up the middle and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Denten Neill walked and Mike LaLuna singled to shortstop to load the bases. Maine third baseman Jarrett Lukas (Old Town, Maine) made a stellar play on a ball hit by Jerry Smith to retire NYIT and keep the game scoreless. Maine had runners on base in both the fourth and fifth innings, but was unable to push across a run. Maine got hits from Jackson and Lukas in the game, while NYIT also finished with a pair of hits. Joe Miller (Valley Stream, N.Y.) was again great for Maine. He allowed two hits over five innings while striking out six. He struck out the first three batters of the game in order. Preston Wasmund threw five innings for NYIT. He also allowed just two hits and fanned one batter in the game. The Black Bears are scheduled to return to action on Saturday, April 5 at approximately 4:00 p.m. at the Winkin Complex on the Husson College campus in Bangor, Maine.
