Maine Baseball Falls to Albany
April 10, 2005 ALBANY, N.Y.-- The University of Maine baseball team saw its six-game winning streak snapped when it fell to Albany 8-6 on Sunday afternoon in Albany, N.Y. The Black Bears fall to 15-9 on the season with the loss and 2-1 in America East play, while Albany improves to 8-8 on the season and 1-2 in conference play. Albany jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Steve Wyland and Leo Corvino each had RBI singles, while Steve Sayre drove home a run when he grounded out. Maine scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to take the lead. Greg Creek (Manchester, Maine) led off the inning with a double to center field. Ryan Quintal (Manchester, N.H.) doubled to right field scoring Creek. Joel Barrett (Brewer, Maine) followed with a two-run home run to knot the game. Mike Ferriggi (Bellmore, N.Y.) singled to center field. Curt Smith (Curacao, Netherlands) singled and advanced to second on the throw while Ferriggi went to third. Ray Vallee (Augusta, Maine) reached on an error by the shortstop and Ferriggi scored. The Great Danes countered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to regain the lead. Maine pulled to within one run in the top of the seventh inning. Quintal doubled down the right field line. Barrett singled up the middle scoring Quintal. Albany scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take the 8-5 lead. The Black Bears put together a rally in the top of the ninth, but it fell just short. Smith struck out but reached first on a passed ball. Aaron Izaryk (Markham, Ontario) walked and Smith advanced to second. Frank Pesanello (Plainville, Mass.) singled to center field scoring Smith. Joe Hough (West Roxbury, Mass.) reached on an error to load the bases, but Maine was not able to push across any more runs.
Creek started the game for Maine and went 5.2 innings. He scattered seven hits while striking out three batters. He falls to 2-2 on the season. Josh Zyskowski (Grand Rapids, Mich.) pitched .1 inning and allowed one run. Nolan Boike (Arlington, Mass.) pitched the final two innings for the Black Bears and allowed one run on two hits. Albany used five pitchers on the afternoon with Giorgio Fuda earning his third win of the season. Shawn Ryan picked up his fifth save in the game. After 24 games on the road, the Black Bears play at Mahaney Diamond for the first time this season when they host Thomas College on Tuesday, April 12 in a game that is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
