Lukas, Patane Lead Maine Past Husson 19-1

BANGOR, Maine -- Jarrett Lukas (Old Town, Maine) had a pair of two-run home runs, while Tony Patane (New Milford, Conn.) was 4-for-6 with four runs scored and five RBI as the University of Maine baseball team downed Husson College 19-1 on Thursday afternoon at the Winkin Complex at Husson College. Maine scored eight runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back. The Black Bears improve to 10-13-1 on the season with the victory. Billy Cather (Worcester, Mass.) led off the top of the first inning with a home run to right center field. For Cather, it was his second homer of the season. Matt Howard (Weston, Mass.) walked and stole second base, while Curt Smith (Willemstad, Curacao) also drew a base on balls. Myckie Lugbauer (Mahopac, N.Y.) then doubled to center field scoring both Howard and Smith. Kevin McAvoy (Brewer, Maine) followed and tripled to right field driving home Lugbauer from second base. Tony Patane doubled to left field and McAvoy scored from second base. Jarrett Lukas followed with a two-run home run to left field. Danny Menendez (Miami, Fla.) singled to left field and scored when Howard singled to center field, giving the Black Bears an 8-0 lead. McAvoy singled to right field in the top of the second inning. Patane followed with a home run that hit off the football scoreboard in left field. For Patane, it was his third home run of the season. The Black Bears added to their lead in the top of the fifth inning. Cather was hit-by-a-pitch and Howard followed with a home run that hit off the top of the fence and bounced over. Howard now ranks second on the team in home runs with four. Lugbauer and McAvoy then reached on back-to-back errors. Lugbauer scored when Patane grounded out. Lukas then belted his second two-run home run of the game and third of the season to left field.
Smith led off the top of the seventh inning with a double to right center field. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored when Patane singled to center field. Joey Martin (Portland, Maine) then doubled to center field and Patane moved to third base. Menendez ripped a double to the left field corner driving in both Patane and Martin, giving Maine an 18-0 lead. Patane doubled to lead off the top of the ninth inning. He advanced to third when Joey Martin grounded out and scored when Danny Menenedez hit a sacrifice fly. Husson got on the board in the bottom of the ninth inning when Dennis Graham homered to left field. Joel Thorney (Toronto, Ontario) went five innings for Maine and allowed just two hits. He struck out eight batters in the game. He improves to 1-1 on the season. Nolan Boike (Arlington, Mass.) made his season debut in the bottom of the sixth inning and allowed two hits and also fanned a pair. Ryan Forrest (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) pitched three innings for the Black Bears and allowed one run on one hit while striking out one. He earns his first save of the season in the game. Kyle Leeman picked up the loss for Husson. Maine returns to action on Friday, April 11 when it hosts America East foe Albany at 4:00 p.m. The Black Bears and Great Danes will now play a doubleheader on Friday due to inclement weather predicted for Saturday. The first game will be nine innings, followed by a seven inning game. -U-M- |
