Black Bears Fall to Stony Brook 3-1

ORONO, Maine-- The University of Maine baseball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Stony Brook on Thursday night in the home-opener at Mahaney Diamond. The Black Bears fall to 17-10-1 on the season and 3-1 in America East play, while Stony Brook improves to 10-17 overall, 2-2 in conference play. The game, which started 2:30 late due to rain, featured a 1:38 minute rain delay in the top of the fourth inning. The game was called after eight innings after a 30 minute fog delay.

Maine opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Matt McGraw (Burlington, Ontario) singled, stole second, advanced to third on an error and scored when Joel Barrett (Brewer, Maine) hit a sacrifice fly.

Stony Brook scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Jon Pasieka led off the inning with a double. Isidro Fortuna walked. Isidro Fortuna followed with a walk. Robert Leonard flied out and Pasieka advanced to third and Fortuna second. Pasieka scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 1-1. Peter Milani followed with a single to left field scoring Fortuna. Tom Pennino singled to right field and Milani scored.

Neither team was able to push across a run the rest of the game. Maine had hits from Kevin McAvoy (Brewer, Maine), Billy Cather (Worcester, Mass.) and McGraw in the game.

Chris DiBiaso led Stony Brook with a pair of hits.

Nolan Boike (Arlington, Mass.) started the game for Maine and went 3.2 innings. He allowed three runs, all earned, on four hits. Boike falls to 3-1 on the season. He was lifted after the 1:38 rain delay. Troy Martin (Dover, N.H.) pitched the final 4.1 innings for Maine in and allowed three hits while striking out four.

 

 

Tom Koehler went seven innings for Stony Brook and allowed one unearned run on three hits. He improves to 2-2 on the season. Gary Novakowski pitched the final inning for Stony Brook and earns his second save of the season.

The two teams return to action on Friday, April 14 when they play a doubleheader starting at 4:00 p.m. at Mahaney Diamond in Orono.
