Black Bears Sweep Doubleheader From Stony Brook

ORONO, Maine- The University of Maine baseball team swept a doubleheader from Stony Brook on Friday afternoon at Mahaney Diamond in Orono, Maine. The Black Bears won the first game 3-2 and took the second game 3-2 as well. In the second game, Kevin McAvoy (Brewer,Maine) scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning when Joe Hough (West Roxbury, Mass.) singled up the middle. Maine improves to 19-10-1 on the season and 5-1 in America East play, while Stony Brook falls to 10-19 overall and 2-4 in conference play.

In the first game, Maine scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Joe Hough and Matt McGraw (Burlington, Ontario) drew back-to-back walks to lead off the inning. Joel Barrett (Brewer, Maine) followed with a single to left field scoring Hough. Curt Smith (Willemstad, Curacao) singled to right field and McGraw scored. Kevin McAvoy (Brewer, Maine) drove home Barrett with a sacrifice fly.

Stony Brook scored a run in the top of the third inning when Chris Cruz homered to left field. The Seawolves added a run in the top of the fourth inning. Isidro Fortuna doubled and advanced to third when Robert Leonard grounded out. Fortuna scored on a wild pitch. Stony Brook nearly tied the game later in the inning, but Maine's Mark Ostrander (Hopkinton, Mass.) threw Pete Milano out at the plate.

Scott Robinson (Ajax, Ontario) pitched five innings for the Black Bears and allowed two runs on six hits while striking out five batters. He improves to 5-2 on the season. Troy Martin (Dover, N.H.) pitched the final two innings and did not allow a hit while striking out a pair of batters. Martin earned his first save of the season.

 

 

Matt Restivo pitched 5.2 innings for the Seawolves and allowed three runs on six hits. He falls to 0-5 on the season. Gary Novakowski pitched the final batter.

In the second game, Maine again struck first in the bottom of the first inning. McGraw walked and Barrett followed with a double to right field and McGraw advanced to third. McGraw scored when Ryan Quintal (Manchester, N.H) grounded out. Smith followed with a single to third base and driving home Barrett.

Stony Brook tied the game in the top of the third inning. Chris Cruz singled to right field and scored on a passed ball. Chris Sipp walked and advanced to second base when Jon Pasieka had a sacrifice bunt. Andres Perez singled to right field and Sipp advanced to third base. He scored when Isidro Fortuna reached on an error.

The score remained 2-2 until the bottom of the seventh inning. McAvoy led off the inning with a single up the middle. Danny Menendez (Miami, Fla.) followed with a sacrifice bunt and McAvoy advanced to second base. Hough then won the game for the Black Bears with his single up the middle.

Mike Powers (Portland, Maine) went 2.1 innings for Maine and allowed two runs on four hits while striking out one batter. Josh Zyskowski (Grand Rapids, Mich.) replaced Powers and went 4.2 innings and allowed just three hits while striking out six batters. Zyskowski picks up the win and improves to 2-0 on the season.

Mike Errigo pitched the first inning for Stony Brook and allowed two runs on two hits. Kris Bakey pitched 5.1 innings and allowed one run on two hits and picks up the loss. He falls to 2-4 on the season. Nick Ab pitched 0.1 inning and allowed one hit.

Maine and Stony Brook conclude their four-game America East series on Saturday, April 15 with a nine inning game beginning at 1:00 p.m.
