ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine baseball team swept a pair of games from UMBC on Saturday afternoon in the home opener for the Black Bears. Maine won the first game 3-2 and took the second game 10-6 in front of 561 fans. The Black Bears improve to 19-9 on the season and 4-1 in America East play, while the Retrievers fall to 7-19, 1-4 in conference play.

In the first game, Ryan Quintal (Manchester, N.H.) had an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning that gave the Black Bears the 3-2 lead. Joe Hough (West Roxbury, Mass.) singled to left field. Hough then stole second base. Greg Creek (Manchester, Maine) followed with a walk before Quintal singled in the game-winning run.

Maine had opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning. Quintal led off the inning and singled to right field. He advanced to second on a wild pitch. Curt Smith (Curacao, Netherlands) singled to center field scoring Quintal. Mike Ferriggi (Bellmore, N.Y.) followed with a single to shortstop. Both Smith and Ferriggi advanced a base on a double steal. Ray Vallee (Augusta, Maine) singled to second base scoring Smith.

UMBC scored a single run in the top of the fourth inning when Steve Russo reached on an error and then scored when Joe Fowler singled to center field. The Retrievers tied the game in the top of the fifth inning. Brian Moran led off the inning with a triple and scored when Kyle Wildasin singled to left field. The game remained knotted at 2-2 until Quintal's RBI single.

Steve Richard (Billerica, Mass.) went 7.0 innings for the Black Bears. He allowed two runs, one of which was earned, on eight hits while striking out five. He improves to 5-0 on the season. Troy Martin (Dover, N.H.) pitched 1.1 innings and allowed two hits while striking out two. Scott Robinson (Ajax, Ontario) recorded the final two outs to pick up his third save of the season. The save moves him into a tie for fourth place on the all-time career saves list at Maine with nine.

 

 

Jon Pavlis went eight innings for the Retrievers and allowed three runs on 11 hits. He falls to 2-2 on the season.

In the second game, UMBC jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Russo reached on an error and scored when Fowler doubled to center field. Maine countered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Smith led off the inning and doubled to center. Matt McGraw (Burlington, Ontario) singled to shortstop. Mark Ostrander (Hopkinton, Mass.) singled to right field scoring Smith. Vallee grounded out to second base and McGraw scored.

The Retrievers added a pair of runs in the top of the third inning. Ian Carman singled to right field and advanced to second on an error. Brian Moran singled to second. Wildasin singled to third base scoring Carman. Tom Rinaldi drove home Moran with a single.

Maine broke the game open in the bottom of the inning with six runs. Quintal singled to left field before Joel Barrett (Brewer, Maine) hit his team-leading fifth home run of the season. Smith followed and reached on an error and then stole second base. Ferriggi reached on an error and Smith scored. McGraw followed with a single and Ferriggi advanced to second. Vallee doubled to right field scoring both McGraw and Ferriggi. Hough singled to center field scoring Vallee.

Fowler led off the top of the fourth inning for the Retrievers and homered. Maine got the run back in the bottom of the inning when Creek hit his fourth home run of the season.

UMBC added a pair of runs in the top of the fifth when Fowler had a two-run single. Vallee capped the scoring for Maine in the bottom of the sixth inning when he hit his first collegiate home run.

Greg Norton (South Portland, Maine) pitched 5.0 innings for the Black Bears and improves to 6-1 on the season. He fanned nine batters in the game. Troy Martin pitched the final two innings for the Black Bears and allowed just one hit.

Zach Clark pitched 6.0 innings for the Retrievers and allowed 10 runs on 11 hits. He falls to 0-4 on the season.

The two teams return to action when they conclude their America East series on Sunday, April 17 at noon at Mahaney Diamond.
