Smith, Ostrander, McGraw Lead Maine Past Colby 11-5

ORONO, Maine-- Curt Smith (Willemstad, Curacao) was 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI to lead the University of Maine baseball team past Colby 11-5 on Tuesday night in Orono, Maine. The Black Bears, who have won eight of nine games, improve to 13-20 on the season. Colby falls to 6-16.

Maine took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Danny Menendez (Miami, Fla.) reached on an error and Billy Cather (Worcester, Mass.) followed with a single. Matt McGraw (Burlington, Ontario) walked to load the bases. Curt Smith hit a sacrifice fly scoring Menendez. Joel Barrett (Brewer, Maine) then doubled down the right field line scoring both Cather and McGraw.

Colby tied the game in the top of the fifth inning. Craig Cooper scored when Brian Liberty reached on a fielder's choice. Tom Salemy tripled to right field scoring Liberty. Kyle McKay followed with a double scoring Salemy from third base.

Maine took the lead back in the bottom of the fifth inning. McGraw singled and then stole second and third base. He scored when Smith grounded out.

The White Mules took their lone lead of the game in the top of the sixth inning. John LaMantia singled and scored when Nick Spillane grounded out. Cooper scored on a wild pitch.

The Black Bears took the lead back for good in the bottom of the sixth inning. Mark Ostrander (Hopkinton, Mass.) singled and Brian Hackett (Bangor, Maine) was hit by a pitch. Menendez followed with a double off the left field fence scoring Ostrander. Hackett scored on a Cather sacrifice fly.

The Black Bears added insurance with five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Ostrander led off the rally with a single up the middle and then stole second base. Hackett singled to shortstop and Menendez walked. Cather singled to right field scoring Ostrander. McGraw reached on a fielder's choice and Hackett scored. Menendez and McGraw then pulled off a double steal with Menendez stealing home and McGraw second. For McGraw, it was his third steal of the game, tying a Maine record for steals in a game with three. Smith followed with a single to left field scoring McGraw. Barrett followed and drew a walk. Myckie Lugbauer (Mahopac, N.Y.) singled to right field scoring Smith.

 

 

Mitch Clegg (Woburn, Mass.) started the game for Maine and went 5.1 innings. He allowed five runs on eight hits while fanning five. Bobby Brown (Chelmsford, Mass.) went 0.1 inning and did not allow a hit. Will Carroll (Boothbay, Maine) went 1.1 innings and allowed one hit while fanning one. Carroll picks up his first career victory in the game. Mike Powers (Portland, Maine) threw one inning and did not allow a hit while fanning one batter. Ryan Forrest (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) pitched the top of the ninth and did not allow a hit.

Colby used six pitchers in the game. Nick Ruocco picks up the loss and falls to 0-1 on the season.

The Black Bears return to action on Thursday, April 26 when they travel to Siena for a 4 p.m. game.
