ORONO, Maine-- It was a record-breaking night for the University of Maine baseball team which defeated Colby College 11-4 on a cold, windy night at Mahaney Diamond. The Black Bears set the school record for steals in a game with nine, and tied the school mark for triples in a season with 23. Maine improves to 23-11-1 on the season with the victory, while Colby falls to 8-17.

Maine took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Joe Hough (West Roxbury, Mass.), who tied a school record with three stolen bases in the game, led off with a bunt single. He stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored when Matt McGraw (Burlington, Ontario) doubled down the left field line. Colby took 2-1 lead in the top of the second inning.

After a 1:37 rain delay, Maine scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning. Kevin McAvoy (Brewer, Maine) walked and Bobby Brown (Chelmsford, Mass.) reached on an error. Danny Menendez walked to load the bases. Hough had a RBI single scoring McAvoy and McGraw drove in a pair of runs with a single to center field. Hough scored the fourth run of the inning for Maine on an error.

The White Mules added two runs in the top of the third inning. Maine scored single runs in the bottom of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Barrett had a sacrifice fly to plate Hough who had walked. Menendez doubled to right field and scored on an error in the fifth inning. McAvoy had an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Maine added three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Quintal tripled to lead off the eighth inning. It was the 23rd triple of the season for Maine, tying the school record set in 1991. Smith had an RBI single. Smith and Brian Hackett (Bangor, Maine) both scored later in the inning to give Maine the 11-4 win.

 

 

Maine stole nine bases in the game, setting a new Maine record for steals in a season. The old record of eight was set in 1968 against Bates and tied in 1991 against Rhode Island and 1999 against Pace.

John Tesseyman (High Falls, N.Y.) went three innings for Maine and allowed four runs, two of which were earned, on six hits. He fanned three batters. Mitch Clegg (Woburn, Mass.) relieved Tesseyman and went 6.0 innings allowing just four hits, He fanned eight batters in the game. Clegg picks up his first collegiate victory and improves to 1-0.

Colby used eight pitchers in the game. Robert Whelan pitched the first two innings and picks up the loss. He falls to 0-4 on the season.

The Black Bears return to action Wednesday, April 26 when they host Holy Cross at 5:00 p.m. in a game that will be played in Sanford, Maine at Goodall Park.
