BANGOR, Maine-- Aaron Izaryk (Markham, Ontario) singled home Joe Hough (West Roxbury, Mass.) with the winning run in the top of the 14th inning as the University of Maine baseball team defeated Husson College 4-3 in 14 innings on Friday evening at the Winkin Complex in Bangor, Maine. The Black Bears improve to 23-11 with the win, while Husson falls to 23-15.

Husson got on the board with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning. Shawn Henderson doubled to left field and Aaron Brideau reached on an error. Jason Harvey walked to load the bases. Justin Spencer drew a walk and forced home Henderson. Sean Braun hit a sacrifice fly driving in Brideau.

Maine answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning with a two-out rally. Ryan Quintal (Manchester, N.H.) singled to center field. Joe Hough, who was 4-for-6 on the day, followed with a single to left field. Ross Cantara (Biddeford, Maine) singled to center field driving home Quintal.

Maine tied the game in the top of the fifth inning. Aaron Izaryk singled to center field to lead off the inning. Mike Ferriggi (Bellmore, N.Y.) followed with a double and Izaryk advanced to third. Curt Smith (Curacao, Netherlands) hit a sacrifice fly to left field scoring Izaryk to tie the game at 2-2.

Husson took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Brideau singled to shortstop and Harvey followed with a double down the left field line. Spencer grounded out to first base and Brideau scored the third run of the game for the Eagles.

Maine tied the game once again in the top of the sixth inning. Greg Creek (Manchester, Maine) led off the inning with a double to center field. He advanced to third when Joel Barrett (Brewer, Maine) flied out to center field and scored when Hough singled to deep short.

 

 

The game remained scoreless for the next seven innings before Maine was able to plate the winning run in the top of the 14th inning in a game that lasted three hours and 27 minutes.

Maine pitching was strong throughout the game. John Tesseyman (High Falls, N.Y.) pitched the first seven innings for Maine and allowed three runs, two of which were earned, on four hits. He struck out six batters in the longest outing of his career. Justin Bishop (Mt. Airy, Md.) pitched a career-high six innings and allowed just four hits while striking out one. He earned his second win of the season and improves to 2-0 on the campaign. Scott Robinson (Ajax, Ontario) pitched the 14th inning for the Black Bears and earned his sixth save of the season. It was the 18th appearance for Robinson this season.

The Black Bears return to action on Saturday, April 30 when they host America East rival Vermont in a doubleheader starting at noon at Mahaney Diamond. Vermont sits on top of the America East standings, while Maine is tied for second.
