Maine Baseball Falls at Albany
April 29, 2007 ALBANY, N.Y.-- The University of Maine baseball team dropped a 15-5 decision to Albany on Sunday afternoon in Albany, N.Y. The Black Bears fall to 14-24 on the season and 5-7 in America East play. Albany improves to 18-20 overall and 5-7 in conference play. Maine jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Billy Cather (Worcester, Mass.) led off the game with a single to center field. Joel Barrett (Brewer, Maine) drove in Cather with a double to right center field. For Barrett, it was his 56th career double, moving him into sole possession of third place on the Maine all-time doubles list. Maine added to its lead in the top of the second inning. Mark Ostrander (Hopkinton, Mass.) led off the inning with a single to center field. Brian Hackett (Bangor, Maine) drew a walk. Tavis Hasenfus (Winthrop, Maine) reached on a fielder's choice. Danny Menendez (Miami, Fla.) loaded the bases when he reached on catcher's interference. Kevin Jackson (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) reached on a fielder's choice and Ostrander scored. Albany got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning. Tom Hill singled and scored when Steve Sayre singled to left field. The Great Danes took the lead in the bottom of the third inning. Al Barbato led off the inning with a double. Dave West had an RBI single driving him in. West scored when Steve Wyland singled. Albany added to its lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Sayre homered to left field. Barbato followed with a two-run homer later in the inning, giving the Great Danes a 6-2 lead. Albany took a 7-2 lead when Dave West homered later in the inning. Leo Corvino made it 8-2 when he was hit by a pitch and scored when Wyland singled.
Sayre homered in his next at-bat, giving Albany a 9-2 lead. Albany scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to increase its lead to 15-2. Maine scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning on a two-run home run by Curt Smith (Willemstad, Curacao). Matt McGraw (Burlington, Ontario) tripled in the top of the ninth inning and scored on a Curt Smith sacarifice fly. Jose Mendoza (Miami, Fla.) went 3.2 innings and allowed eight runs on eight hits. He falls to 1-3 on the season. Will Carroll (Boothbay, Maine) went 1.2 innings and allowed five runs on five hits. Ryan Forrest (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) pitched 1.2 innings and allowed two runs on two hits while fanning three. Micth Clegg (Woburn, Mass.) pitched the final inning for the Black Bears and allowed no runs on one hit. The Black Bears return to action on Wednesday, May 2 when they face the University of Southern Maine at Goodall Park in Sanford, Maine at 6 p.m.
