Baseball Falls at USM

SANFORD, Maine-- The University of Maine baseball team dropped a 13-7 decision to the University of Southern Maine on Wednesday night in Sanford, Maine. The Black Bears fall to 14-25 overall, while Southern Maine improves to 23-11 on the campaign. Joel Barrett (Brewer, Maine) moved into a tie for second place on the Mainae all-time doubles list with his 58th double on the night.

The Black Bears took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Kevin McAvoy (Brewer, Maine) doubled off the left field walk and Kevin Jackson (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) followed and drew a walk. Danny Menendez (Miami, Fla.) ripped a single through the right side driving in McAvoy.

USM tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Eddie Skefffington reached on a fielder's choice and scored when Josh McGhee doubled to left field. The Huskies took the lead when Joe Ganley singled to left field scoring McGhee with the go ahead run.

Maine tied the game in the top of the fifth inning. Danny Menendez walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch, stole third base and scored when Matt McGraw (Burlington, Ontario) singled to center field.

USM took the lead back in the bottom of the fifth inning. Chris Burleson singled and Collin Henry followed with a walk. Ryan Bourque then doubled to center field driving in both Burleson and Henry. Max Arsenault drew a walk. Josh Mackey doubled driving in Bourque and Arsenault, giving USM a 6-2 lead.

Maine pulled to within two runs in the top of the sixth inning when Myckie Lugbauer (Mahopac, N.Y.) hit a two-run home run to right field. Joel Barrett (Brewer, Maine) singled ahead of Lugbauer.

 

 

USM added to its lead with six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and one in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Curt Smith (Willemstad, Curacao) reached on an error and Joel Barrett followed with his 58th career double in the top of the eighth inning. He ties Joe Drapeau (2000-03) for second place on the all-time doubles list. Smith scored when McAvoy grounded out and Barrett scored on an error on the play. McAvoy scored to make it 12-7 on a fielder's choice.

Brad Hertzler (Westport, Mass.) started for Maine and went one inning, allowed one hit and fanned one batter. Greg Norton (South Portland, Maine) pitched the second inning. He allowed one hit and fanned a pair. Alejandro Balsinde (Miami, Fla.) went two innings and allowed two runs on four hits. He fanned one batter. Kevin McAvoy allowed three runs on two hits and picks up the loss. He falls to 0-3 on the season. Mike Powers (Portland, Maine) went two innings and allowed four runs, two of which were earned, on three hits. Ryan Forrest (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) went one inning and allowed three runs, none of which were earned, on three hits. Mitch Clegg (Woburn, Mass.) went one inning and allowed one unearned run on one hit.

The Black Bears return to action on Friday, May 4 when it hosts the University of Vermont at 6 p.m. at Mahaney Diamond.
