Baseball Falls to Hartford 3-2

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine baseball fell to Hartford 6-3 on Friday night at Mahaney Diamond in Orono, Maine. Billy Cather (Worcester, Mass.) led the Black Bears with three hits and a run scored. Maine falls to 16-22-1 on the season and 4-9 in America East play. Hartford improves to 15-24 overall and 7-6 in conference play.

Maine jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Cather led off the inning with a single up the middle. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and third on a passed ball. Cather scored the first run of the game when Curt Smith (Willemstad, Curacao) hit a sacrifice fly.

Hartford got the run back in the top of the second to tie the game at 1-1. Andy Drexel was hit-by-a-pitch and Brady Stouffer followed and reached on an error. Adam Grap was hit-by-a-pitch to load the bases. Drexel scored on an error to tie the game.

Maine took the lead right back in the bottom of the second inning with a pair of runs. Mark Ostrander (Hopkinton, Mass.) led off the inning with a double to center field. Tony Patane (New Milford, Conn.) followed and drew a walk. Hartford attempted to pick Ostrander off and wound up committing an error. Ostrander scored on the play, while Patane advanced to third base. Patane scored when Joe Mercurio (Brewster, N.Y.) singled to right field.

Hartford pulled to within one run in the top of the third when Bill Perry singled to center field, advanced to third when Matt Walker doubled and scored when Mike Amendola hit a sacrifice fly. The Hawks tied the game in the top of the fifth. Ben Sobocinski doubled to center field and scored on a ground out.

 

 

The Hawks scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning. Grap had a RBI single scoring Stouffer, while Grap and Simon Kudernatsch each scored on wild pitches.

The Black Bears left one runner on the in sixth and two in the eighth, but were unable push any more runners across the plate. In the eighth, Myckie Lugbauer (Mahopac, N.Y.) hit his 19th double of the season, leaving him just three doubles shy of the Maine record for doubles in a season of 22.

Kevin Scanlan (Sudbury, Mass.) went six innings for Maine. He allowed six runs, five of which were earned, on six hits. He struck out six batters in the game and falls to 2-4 on the season. Will Carroll (Boothbay, Maine) pitched the final three innings and did not allow a hit while fanning three batters.

Weston Szymanski pitched the complete game for Hartford. He allowed three runs on eight hits while striking out 10. He improves 3-4 on the season.

The Black Bears and Hawks return to action on Saturday, May 3 when they play a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
