Maine Baseball Falls to Albany

ORONO, Maine-- Kevin McAvoy (Brewer, Maine) and Ryan Quintal (Manchester, N.H.) each scored and run and drove one in, but it was not enough as the University of Maine baseball team fell to Albany 10-3 on Friday night at Mahaney Diamond in Orono, Maine. The Black Bears fall to 26-14-1 on the season and 7-4 in America East play, while Albany improves to 12-27 overall and 6-7 in America East play. Albany jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Sean Donovan singled up the middle and Nate Olson followed and reached on an error. Donovan scored when Steve Sayre grounded out. The Great Danes added to their lead in the top of the fourth inning. Tom Hill singled to center field, stole second and scored when Olson singled to right. Maine knotted the score in the bottom of the fourth inning. Quintal led off with a single to center field. McAvoy belted a double to right center field driving in Quintal. For McAvoy, it was his team-leading 47th RBI of the season. McAvoy advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored when Sean Parker (Worcester, Mass.) singled up the middle. The Great Danes took the lead right back with four runs in top of the fifth inning. Al Barbato doubled to right field. Steve Wyland singled scoring Barbato. Olson, who had four hits and four RBI in the game, had a two-run single later in the inning and Zac Halloran drew a bases loaded walk plating the fourth run of the inning. Albany extended its lead to 9-2 with three runs in the sixth inning. Wyland drove in a run with a RBI single, while Hill and Sayre each drove home runs with sacrifice flies. The Great Danes added a run in the eighth inning when Wyland walked and scored when Olson singled. Maine cut into the lead in the ninth inning, but it was not enough. Hough led off the inning and walked. He then stole second base, his team-leading 16th steal of the season. Joel Barrett (Brewer, Maine), who was 2-for-4 on the night, also walked. Quintal singled to left field scoring Hough for the third run of the game.
Scott Robinson (Ajax, Ontario) went 4.2 innings for Maine and allowed six runs, five of which were earned, on eight hits. He fanned three batters and falls to 7-3 on the season. Troy Martin (Dover, N.H.) relieved Robinson and went 0.1 inning and allowed two runs on one hit. Mitch Clegg (Woburn, Mass.) went 4.0 innings and allowed two runs, one of which was earned, on five hits. Mark Suchowiecki pitched eight innings for Albany and allowed two runs on seven hits while fanning eight. He improves to 4-4 on the season. Matthew Herrick pitched the final inning for the Great Danes and allowed one run on one hit. The two teams continue their America East series on Saturday, May 6 with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. Before the game, Maine will have activities celebrating the life of benefactor Larry Mahaney. -U-M- |
