Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Vermont

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Vermont on Saturday afternoon at Centennial Field in Burlington, Vt. The Black Bears dropped the first game 4-2 and lost the second one 1-0. Maine falls to 18-25-1 on the season and 6-12 in America East play. Vermont improves to 23-20 overall and 9-9 in conference play.

In the first game, Maine struck first with a run in the top of the first inning. Billy Cather (Worcester, Mass.) singled up the middle and Curt Smith (Willemstad, Curacao) followed with a double into the left field corner scoring Cather from first base.

The Catamounts tied the game in the bottom of the second inning. Ethan Paquette led off the inning with a double right field. Jeff Nolet singled up the middle and Paquette advanced to third base. Brad Currier then double off the right field wall, scoring Paquette to tie the game at 1-1.

Maine took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning. Mark Ostrander (Hopkinton, Mass.) singled to left field and scored when Myckie Lugbauer (Mahopac, N.Y.) singled to shallow right center field.

Vermont took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Kyle Massie led off the inning with a single and Miguel Magrass reached on an error. Both runners advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt by Justin Milo. Matt Duffy then singled to right field sending home both Massie and Magrass. The Catamounts added a run in the bottom of the eighth inning when Todd Allen walked and scored on an error.

Maine catcher Myckie Lugbauer threw four base runners out trying to steal in the game.

Kevin Scanlan (Sudbury, Mass.) went six innings for Maine. He allowed three runs, two of which were earned, on 10 hits. He struck out six batters in the game and falls to 2-5 on the season. Kyle Benoit (Brampton, Ontario) relieved Scanlan and pitched the final two innings. He allowed one unearned run on one hit while striking out one.

 

 

Joe Serafin pitched the complete game and allowed two runs on seven hits while striking out six. He improves to 6-3 on the season.

In the second game, Vermont took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning and that was all they would need. Kyle Henry drew a walk and scored when Mark Micowski singled to center field.

Vermont pitcher Eric Thompson had his no-hitter broken up with two outs in the top of the seventh inning by a single through the left side by Kevin McAvoy (Brewer, Maine).

Lugbauer threw out three more base runners attempting to steal in the second game to finish with seven base runners thrown out on the day.

Matt Jebb (Toronto, Ontario) went 5.1 innings and allowed one runs on seven hits. He falls to 2-5 on the season. Benoit pitched the final 0.2 innings for the Black Bears.

The two teams finish their series with a doubleheader on Sunday, May 11 starting at 1 p.m. at Centennial Field in Burlington, Vt.
