Maine Falls to Binghamton 12-4
May 15, 2008 VESTAL, N.Y. -- The University of Maine baseball team dropped a 12-4 decision to Binghamton on Friday afternoon in Vestal, N.Y. The Black Bears fall to 19-27-1 on the season and 7-14 in America East play. Binghamton improves to 26-24 on the season and 14-7 in conference play. Binghamton jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a three-run home run by Kyle Klee. The Bearcats added a pair of runs in the in the bottom of the second inning. Jeff Skelhorne-Gross and Corey Taylor had back-to-back singles. Peter Bregartner drove home Skelhorne-Gross on a single, while Taylor scored on a squeeze bunt. Binghamton scored a run in the fourth when Taylor singled and scored when James had an RBI single. Tom Baileys made it 7-0 in the top of the fifth when he singled and scored on a Taylor single. Maine got on the board in the top of the sixth inning. Kevin Jackson (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) led off the inning with a single up the middle. Curt Smith (Willemstad, Curacao) followed with a single and Jackson advanced to third on a throwing error. Myckie Lugbauer (Mahopac, N.Y.) drove home Jackson with a sacrifice fly. The Bearcats got the run back in the bottom of the sixth inning. James singled, stole second and third and scored when Kyle Klee grounded out. The Bearcats added a run in the bottom of the seventh when Baileys singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch, to third on a single and scored on a wild pitch. Maine added a run in the top of the eighth. Smith doubled and scored on a Kevin McAvoy (Brewer, Maine) sacrifice fly. For Smith, it was the 58th double of his career, tying him with Joe Drapeau (2000-2003) for third place on the all-time doubles list. Binghamton answered in the bottom of the eighth inning with three runs. Brian Ivan had a one-run double, while Skelhorne-Gross had a two-run double into the left field corner.
Maine added two runs in the top of the ninth. Jarrett Lukas (Old Town, Maine), who had two hits on the day, was hit by a pitch and scored when Jackson reached on a fielder's choice. Matt Howard (Weston, Mass.) drew a walk and scored when Smith doubled. It was the 59th double of his career, moving him into sole possession of third place on Maine's all-time doubles list. With his three hits in the game, he sits four hits shy of 300 with three games remaining in his career. Alejandro Balsinde (Miami, Fla.) started for Maine and went four innings. He allowed six runs on 11 hits and falls to 2-7 on the season. Jonathan Balentina (Willemstad, Curacao) pitched the next four innings and allowed six runs on nine hits. Zach Groh went seven innings for Binghamton and allowed one unearned run on seven hits. He struck out seven batters in the game and improves to 5-3 on the season. Maine and Binghamton return to action on Friday, May 16 when they play a doubleheader starting at 12:00 noon. -U-M- |
