Maine Downs Vermont 14-2
May 26, 2005 BURLINGTON, Vt.-- The University of Maine baseball team scored in each of the first five innings to build a 9-2 lead and win its first game of the 2005 America East Tournament 14-2 on Thursday evening. The Black Bears improves to 32-16 on the season and will play Northeastern in the winners bracket of the tournament on Friday, May 27 at 3:30 p.m. It was a balanced attack for the Black Bears as all nine players scored at least one run and five different players drove in at least one run. Every player in the Maine lineup recorded at least one hit. The 14 runs by Maine were a season-high. The Black Bears recorded 19 hits in the game which was third most by Maine in a game this season. Maine got on the board in the first inning. Joe Hough (West Roxbury, Mass.) led off the game with a single to left field. Greg Creek (Manchester, Maine) followed with a single to right field after hitting several balls just foul. Joel Barrett (Brewer, Maine) singled up the middle scoring Hough from second base. Aaron Izaryk (Markham, Ontario) walked to load the bases. Curt Smith (Curacao, Netherlands) singled to left field scoring Creek with the second run of the game for the Black Bears. The Black Bears added a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning. Creek drew a two-out walk and Barrett followed with a long triple to center field scoring Creek. For Barrett, it was his team-leading 38th RBI of the season. Barrett scored on a wild pitch giving Maine a 4-0 lead. Ryan Quintal (Manchester, N.H.) followed with a double to right center. Izaryk drew his second walk of the game and Quintal advanced to third on ball four which went to the backstop. Matt McGraw (Burlington, Ontario) led off the third inning with a single up the middle. Mike Ferriggi (Bellmore, N.Y.) followed and ripped a double to deep center field on a night when a strong wind was blowing straight in. Hough singled to left field driving home both McGraw and Ferriggi. Hough advanced to second on the throw to the plate. Creek and Barrett were both hit by pitches to load the bases once again for Maine but the Black Bears were unable to push across additional runs.
Izaryk drew his third straight walk to lead off the fourth inning. He advanced to second on a wild pitch. McGraw followed with a single up the middle scoring Izaryk to give Maine a 7-0 lead. Vermont got on the board in the top of the fifth inning. Steve Richard (Billerica, Mass.) walked the bases loaded and then walked in the first run of the game for the Catamounts. Vermont added a run when Jason Carey scored on a wild pitch. Richard was then ejected from the game after the wild pitch. Troy Martin (Dover, N.H.) replaced Richard on the mound. Richard went 4.1 innings and allowed two runs on four hits. He struck out five and walked five. Martin was able to get two outs without allowing additional runs in fifth. The Black Bears answered in the bottom of the fifth inning. Hough singled to shallow center field and stole his team-leading 21st base of the season. Quintal hit an RBI double scoring Hough. For Quintal, it was his second double of the game. Izaryk singled to shortstop and then threw over the head of the Catamount first baseman. Quintal scored on the error becoming the seventh Maine runner to score a run in the game. Izaryk led off the eighth with a single up the middle. Smith followed with a double to center field and McGraw advanced to third base. McGraw followed with a line drive to left field scoring Izaryk. Smith scored when Ferriggi grounded out to give Maine and 11-2 lead. Ray Vallee (Augusta, Maine) and Hough followed with singles. For Hough, it was his fourth hit of the game. Creek then recorded his second walk of the game to load the bases. Barrett drew a bases loaded walk to give Maine a 12-2 lead. For Barrett, it was his third RBI of the game. Quintal followed with a walk that forced home Hough. Izaryk was then hit by a pitch to force home Creek giving Maine a 14-2 lead. Martin pitched 3.2 innings and improves to 8.2 on the season. He allowed just two hits while striking out five. He improves to 8-2 on the season. Ryan Brown (Milford, Maine) pitched the ninth inning for Maine and allowed one hit.
