Maine Downs Holy Cross 4-3

SANFORD, Maine-- The University of Maine baseball team defeated Holy Cross 4-3 on Wednesday afternoon at Goodall Park in Sanford, Maine. The Black Bears improve to 24-11-1 on the season, while Holy Cross falls 15-23-1. Scott Robinson (Ajax, Ontario) pitched the ninth inning and set the school record with his 78th appearance on the mound. He also tied the Maine record for career saves, with his 19th. He ties Mark LeBlanc (1986-89) who finished his career with 19 saves.

Maine opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Joe Hough (West Roxbury, Mass.) led off the game with a double to right center field. He scored when Matt McGraw (Burlington, Ontario) doubled down the left field line.

The Black Bears added to their lead in the bottom of the third inning. Sean Parker (Worcester, Mass.) led off the inning with a single to left field. Hough followed and drew a walk. McGraw advanced both runners on a sacrifice bunt. Parker scored when Barrett grounded out.

Holy Cross tied game in the top of the fourth inning. Tyler Stampone led off the inning with a double to left center field and scored when Tom Potvin singled. Tim Hughes followed with a single and Potvin advanced to third base. Andrew Sweeney doubled down the right field line scoring Potvin to tie the game.

Maine took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Ryan Quintal (Manchester, N.H.) doubled to straight away center field, 419 feet away. He advanced to third when Curt Smith (Willemstad, Curacao) grounded out. Kevin McAvoy (Brewer, Maine) singled to third base driving in Quintal for the go ahead run. McAvoy advanced to third on an error.

McGraw led off the eighth inning with a single to right field. He stole second and advanced to third on an error. McGraw scored when Quintal singled to right field. For Quintal, it was his 159 career RBI, moving him into sole possession of fourth place on the Maine career RBI list.

Holy Cross added a run in the top of the ninth inning to pull to within 4-3, but that is as close as it would get.

Jose Mendoza (Miami, Fla.) went 4.1 innings for Maine and allowed two runs on eight his. AJ Balsinde (Miami, Fla.) relieved Mendoza went 2.2 innings. He fanned five batters without allowing a hit. He picks up the win and improves to 1-1 on the season. Troy Martin (Dover, N.H.) replaced Balsinde in the top of the eighth inning. Martin pitched a scoreless eighth for the Black Bears. Robinson pitched the ninth inning to earn the save.

Dan Seip went four innings for Holy Cross and allowed two runs on five hits. Kevin Beglane relieved Seip and went three innings. He allowed two runs on four hits and falls to 0-5 on the season. Tim Thran pitched the eighth inning for Holy Cross and allowed one hit.

The Black Bears return to action on Friday, April 28 when they travel to Binghamton for a 3:00 p.m. game.
