Five Student-Athletes Named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Teams

ORONO, Maine-- University of Maine baseball players Matt McGraw (Burlington, Ontario), Ryan Quintal (Manchester, N.H.) and Scott Robinson (Ajax, Ontario) along with softball player Brittany Cheney (Abington, Mass.) were all named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team on Thursday, May 11. Softball player Erin Provost (Peru, N.Y.) received Second Team Honors.

McGraw, who named to the team as a designated hitter, is a junior business major with a 3.64 GPA. He has seen action in 40 games for the Black Bears this season and is hitting .324 with 38 runs scored and 29 RBI. He has eight doubles, two triples, two home runs and ranks third on the team with 12 stolen bases. McGraw was named the America East Player of the Week earlier this season. In 2004, McGraw was named to the America East All-Rookie Team, along with receiving America East All-Tournament honors. McGraw is a Maine Scholar-Athlete Award winner and has also been named to the America East Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll. He has been named to the Dean's List at Maine and also been inducted into the Beta Gamma Sigma Business Honor Society.

Quintal is a senior business major with a 3.28 GPA. He has seen action in 41 games for the Black Bears this season and has scored 37 runs and driven in 46. He has 11 doubles, four triples and six home runs, which is tied for the team lead. Quintal was named America East Player of the Week and named to the College Baseball Foundation National Honor Roll the week of April 3, 2006. Quintal, who was a 2005 CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team selection, ranks fourth on Maine's all-time RBI list with 164. He was named to the America East Second Team along with the America East All-Tournament Team a year ago. He is a Maine Scholar-Athlete Award winner and has also been named to the America East Academic Honor Roll.

Scott Robinson is a graduate student in kinesiology and physical education. He had a 3.43 GPA as an undergraduate and a 4.00 GPA in graduate school. Robinson, a pitcher, is 7-3 on the season with a 5.23 ERA and a team-high 56 strikeouts. He is Maine's all-time leader in career appearances with 81 and is tied for the all-time saves record at Maine with 19. Robinson's seven wins lead America East and his four saves are tied for first. Earlier this season, Robinson fanned 16 batters in a win over UMBC, one shy of tying the school record for strikeouts in a game. Robinson is a Maine Scholar-Athlete Award winner and has also been named to the America East Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll. He was named the College of Education International Student of the Year in 2004-05.

Britany Cheney is a senior psychology and communications double major, with a 3.73 grade point average. She was named to the America East First-Team earlier this week and leads the team with a .384 batting average. Her 61 hits, 34 RBIs and 7 home runs all lead the Black Bears. Cheney has been named to the America East First Team three times and was a second team selection as a freshman. In January, she was the recipient of the M Club Dean Smith Award. She has also earned America East Academic Honor Roll honors the past three seasons and is a Maine Scholar-Athlete.

Erin Provost is senior communication sciences and disorders major. She has a 3.89 grade point average and is scheduled to graduate this weekend. She was named to the America East Second Team earlier this week. Provost is third on the team with a .307 batting average and is second on the team with 51 hits and 31 RBIs. She has been on the America East Academic Honor Roll the past three seasons and is a Maine Scholar-Athlete.

McGraw, Robinson, Quintal and Cheney will all be placed on the national ballot for Academic for ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Honors.
