Izaryk Named to America East First Team
May 24, 2005 ORONO, Maine-- Five University of Maine baseball players received America East honors at the America East banquet on Wednesday night in Burlington, Vt. Senior Aaron Izaryk (Markham, Ontario) was named to the America East first team. Steve Richard (Billerica, Mass.), Ryan Quintal (Manchester, N.H.) and Greg Creek (Manchester, Maine) were all named to the America East second team. Curt Smith (Curacao, Netherlands) was named to the America East all-rookie team. Izaryk, a catcher, was named to the America East first team for the third time in his career. He is batting .325 with 30 runs scored and 26 RBI. Izaryk has 14 doubles on the season and a .982 fielding percentage. He has 17 multi-hit games and five multi-RBI games. His eight game hitting streak earlier this season ranks tied for second longest on the team. Izaryk was named to the America East first team in 2002 and 2004, while earning second team honors in 2003. He has been named to the America East all-tournament team twice. As a freshman, Izaryk was named a Collegiate Baseball/Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American. Izaryk is a three-time UMaine scholar-athlete award winner and has also been named to the America East Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll. Earlier this season, he earned the M Club Dean Smith award presented to the top male and female student-athletes at UMaine. He was recently named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team. Richard was named to the America East second team as a pitcher. He is 7-1 on the season with a team-best 2.19 ERA which also leads America East. He is tied for the lead in America East with 13 games started. Richard is second in the conference in innings pitched with 86.1 and in wins with seven. His 82 strikeouts are fourth in America East. Twice this season Richard has earned America East Pitcher of the Week honors. He is four strikeouts shy of tying Bill Swift for sixth place on the single season leaders list. Richard struck out a career-high 10 batters earlier this season against Albany. He has fanned at least seven batters in seven games this season. Richard has not allowed an extra base hit in his last three games. Quintal, who was named to the America East second team as an outfielder, is batting .342 with 41 runs scored and 36 RBI. His 64 hits and 16 doubles are both team-highs. Quintal has five home runs on the season. His 25 multi-hit games lead the Black Bears and his nine multi-RBI games are second on the team. He ranks third in America East in doubles and fifth in hits. Quintal is one of just two Maine players to play in all 47 games this season. His eight game hitting streak earlier this season is tied for second longest on the team this season. Earlier this season, he was named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District first team. He is a UMaine Scholar-Athlete award winner and has been named to the America East Academic Honor Roll. As a freshman, Quintal was named to the America East all-rookie team. Creek was named to the America East second team as a designated hitter. He is batting .338 with 41 runs scored and 27 RBI. He has 11 doubles and leads the team with nine home runs. Creek has a .597 slugging percentage and a .449 on-base percentage. He ranks second in America East in walks and slugging percentage, third in home runs and fourth in on base percentage. Creek ranks third on the team with five stolen bases. As a junior, Creek was named to the America East second team and also earned New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association second team honors. He is a UMaine Scholar-Athlete award winner and has also been named to the America East Commissioner's Honor Roll. Smith was named to the America East all-rookie team. He has started 45 games this season at third base. Smith leads Maine with a .349 batting average. He has scored 31 runs on the season and driven in 32. He has 12 doubles, one triple and two home runs. Smith ranks second on the team 10 stolen bases. He is second on the team with 22 multi-hit games and ranks third with eight multi-RBI games. Earlier this season, he recorded an eight-game hitting streak. Four times this season Smith has earned America East Rookie of the Week honors. The Black Bears, 31-16 on the season and 14-7 in America East play, return to action when they face Vermont in the America East Tournament on Thursday, May 26 at 7:00 p.m. at Centennial Field in Burlington, Vt. -U-M-
