Creek, Richard, Smith Honored
June 7, 2005 OXFORD, MS-- University of Maine baseball players Greg Creek (Manchester, Maine), Steve Richard (Billerica, Mass.) and Curt Smith (Curacao, Netherlands) were all named to the NCAA Oxford Regional All-Tournament team. They become the first Black Bears to be named to an NCAA All-Tournament team since the 1991 season. Creek was named to the team as a designated hitter. He hit .467 in three games with three runs scored and two RBI. Creek was 7-for-15 with two doubles and a triple. He went 3-for-4 in Maine's loss to Ole Miss, a team ranked ninth in the country. He followed that up with a pair of hits in Maine's 12-2 win over Southern Miss and its 11-10 loss to Oklahoma. Creek hit a two-run triple in the eighth inning against Oklahoma which saw Maine score six runs and knot the score at 10-10. Richard was one of the two pitchers selected to the all-touranment team. He pitched into the seventh inning and earned a win in Maine's 12-2 win over Southern Miss. Richard did not allow a run on five hits. He allowed just one extra base hit in the game. Richard finished the season 9-1 with a 2.07 ERA. Smith, a freshman third baseman, batted .417 in three games with four runs scored and two RBI. He recorded two triples. He was 3-for-5 in Maine's 12-2 win over Southern Miss where he scored three runs and hit a triple. He was 2-for-4 with a run scored and one RBI in Maine's 11-10 loss to Oklahoma. He led off Maine's six-run eighth inning witha triple and also recorded a single later in the inning to keep the Maine rally going. Smith finished the three games with a 1.000 slugging percentage. Maine finished the season 35-19. The Black Bears won an America East Championship and their first NCAA Regional game since the 1991 season.
