Smith Named Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American

ORONO, Maine-- University of Maine baseball rookie Curt Smith (Willemstad, Curacao) was named a 2005 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American on Wednesday, June 8. The team was chosen by Collegiate Baseball newspaper. Smith was the lone America East player selected to the team.

Smith finished second on the team with a .343 batting average. He started 52 of the 54 games for the Black Bears this season and scored 37 runs and drove in 38. Smith hit 13 doubles, five triples and three home runs. His five triples were tied for the team-lead. He stole 10 bases on the season which ranked second on the team. Smith recorded 26 multi-hit games and nine multi-RBI games. He put together an eight game hitting streak earlier in the season.

Four times this season Smith was named the America East Rookie of the Week. He was named to the America East All-Rookie Team. Smith earned NCAA Regional All-Tournament honors after batting .417 in the tournament in three games with four runs scored and two RBI. He hit two triples and a home run in the three games with a 1.000 slugging percentage.

Smith joins a long list of Black Bears who have earned Freshman All-America honors including Mark Sweeney (1988), T.J. Sheedy (1995), Mike Ross (1999), Joe Drapeau (2000), Mike Collar (2001), Aaron Izaryk (2002) and Greg Norton (2003).

Maine finished the season 35-19. The Black Bears won an America East Championship and their first NCAA Regional game since the 1991 season.
