Baseball Coach Paul Kostacopoulos Resigns
June 25, 2005 ORONO, Maine- The University of Maine baseball coach Paul Kostacopoulos has resigned his position to become the head coach at the Naval Academy. "This is a great opportunity for Paul," said Maine Director of Athletics Patrick Nero. "He has done a tremendous job with the baseball program at Maine over the past nine seasons. This past season was exciting as he led the Black Bears to a great win in the NCAA Regionals." "The tradition of the Maine Baseball program leaves us with a very positive outlook," added Nero. "The search for a replacement will begin immediately and we are excited for the future." The baseball program at Maine is one of the top programs in New England college baseball. The Black Bears have made appearances in seven College World Series (1964, 1976, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1986). They have reached the NCAA Regionals 14 times, including the 2005 season where they defeated Southern Mississippi. In nine years at the helm for the Black Bears, Kostacopoulos has posted a 284-195 record. Prior to Maine, he was the head coach at Providence College for seven seasons with a 220-137 record. Overall, he is 504-329 in sixteen seasons as a head coach. He was named the America East Coach of the Year in 1997 and 2001, and Big East Coach of the Year in 1995. He led the Friars to NCAA appearances in 1992 and 1995, and led the Black Bears to the NCAA Tournament in 2002 and 2005.
