Chris Markwood begins his third season on the Maine coaching staff after an outstanding career with the Black Bears. Markwood served as captain of the 2004-05 squad.
?In his second season as an assistant, Markwood worked with the guards and had a signifiacnt roll in recruiting and scouting. He helped Mark Socoby drastically increase his output from his freshman to sophomore season, and acheieve All-America East status.
In his first season on the Black Bear coaching staff, Markwood primarily worked with film exchange and travel. He also assisted with players in individual workouts.
?"We are delighted to have Chris back with our program," said Maine head coach Ted Woodward upon his hiring. "He was a leader and well-respected member of our Black Bears community as a student-athlete. He is a person of high values and character, and we look forward to the addition of him to our staff."
?A native of South Portland, Maine, Markwood transferred to Maine for his final two seasons after starting his career at Notre Dame. He saw action in 45 games for the Black Bears, averaging 6.7 points per game and 3.0 assists per contest. Markwood led the Black Bears in assists in 2004-05, when he averaged 3.7 per contest.
?Markwood was primarily known as a defensive specialist, as he would often guard the opposing team's top guard. One of his offensive highlights came when he hit a three-point field goal with just 2.2 seconds remaining in the 2005 America East quarterfinals which gave Maine a 47-45 upset win over Boston University.
?Markwood was also named a Maine Scholar-Athlete Award winner while at Maine.
?Markwood was highly recruited after a stellar career at South Portland High School. He was named the 2000 Maine State Gatorade Player of the Year. He finished his high school career with 1,083 points.
