Men's Basketball Falls to Colgate
Jan. 2, 2008 HAMILTON, New York-- The men's basketball team fell to Colgate Wednesday night by the score of 70-62. Maine drops to 4-9 on the season, while Colgate improved to 8-5. Mark Socoby (Houlton, Maine) led Maine with 22 points, while Junior Bernal (Manhattan, New York) pitched in with 18 points and five rebounds. Kyle Roemer (Martinez, California) led Colgate with 17 points. The Black Bears were led in the first half by Bernal who had 10 points in the first half. Socoby added seven points in the first 20 minutes for the Black Bears. Maine out-rebounded Colgate 18-to-11 in the first half, while Colgate out-shot Maine as the Raiders went 14-for-27 from the field. The Black Bears went nine-for-23 from the field in the first stanza. Tim Pounds (Dudley, North Carolina) led Colgate in the first half with eight points. The Black Bears were down 33-to-26 at halftime. In the second half, Maine used a seven-to-one run to cut the Raider lead to one on a Jordan Cook (Hampden, Maine) layup. Colgate followed the Maine run by going on a seven-to-nothing run, and the Raiders kept the lead the rest of the way. Colgate took its largest lead of 14 points with eight minutes to go in the game, but Maine played hard and chipped away at the lead. The Black Bears got the lead down to eight, but time ran out on them. For the game, Maine out-rebounded Colgate by a 33-to-30 margin, but the Raiders shot 35 free-throws, sinking 25 of them. Maine shot well from the charity stripe, going 16-for-22, but also had 23 turnovers to Colgate's 13. Cook played well in his 13 minutes of action, getting six points, four rebounds and a block. Phil Tchekane Bofia (Yaounde, Cameroon) also played well as he had nine points in a little over a half's worth of action. The Black Bears return to action on Sunday, Jan. 6, when they travel to take on Stony Brook for a 2 pm game. Maine returns home on Jan. 16, when the Vermont Catamounts come to the Alfond Arena for a 7:30 pm game.
