Men's Basketball Falls to Stony Brook

Jan. 6, 2008

Box Score

STONY BROOK, New York-- The men's basketball team fell to Stony Brook by a score of 75-59 Sunday afternoon. With the win, Stony Brook improves to 4-10, while Maine fell to 4-10. Mark Socoby (Houlton, Maine) led Maine with 27 points and five rebounds. Mitchell Beauford (Queens, New York) led Stony Brook with 21 points.

The Black Bears got behind early, going down by seven points five minutes into the game. Phil Tchekane Bofia (Yaounde, Cameroon) stopped the bleeding when he delivered a thunderous one-handed dunk from the baseline. The dunk began an 11-to-nothing run for the Black Bears that gave them a three point lead.

Stony Brook came back and took the lead, as the hot-shooting Seawolves went 18-for-35 from the field. Maine struggled in the first half, and went 9-for-22 from the floor. Stony Brook was led by Beauford, who had 15 points in the first half. The Black Bears were led by Socoby who had 12 points on four-of-five shooting from three-point range in the first half. Tchekane Bofia added four points, four rebounds and two assists for Maine. The Black Bears went into halftime down 45-29, due partly to the 12 turnovers they had in the first half.

In the second half, the Black Bears and Seawolves battled back and forth for the first 10 minutes as Stony Brook maintained its 16-point lead. Tchekane Bofia was tough on the glass in the second half, getting his ninth rebound of the game and fifth of the half with 10 minutes still to go in the game. Sean McNally (Gardiner, Maine) also played tough in the second half, hustling for rebounds and dunking the ball with authority for his first two points of the game.

Maine continued to play tough, but the 16-point halftime lead was too much for the Black Bears to overcome, as the Seawolves shot the ball well from the floor and the free-throw line.

For the game, the Black Bears shot 38 percent to the Seawolves' 45 percent. Maine out-rebounded Stony Brook 41-to-31. Maine committed 24 turnovers, while Stony Brook only turned the ball over 11 times.

The Black Bears return to action on Jan. 12, when they travel to take on UMBC in a 7 pm game.
