Men's Basketball Falls to Vermont

ORONO, Maine- The University of Maine men's basketball team dropped a close game to Vermont 75-58. With the loss, the Black Bears dropped to 5-11 overall and 1-2 in America East play, while Vermont improved to 8-9 and 3-2 in America East. Maine was led by Brian Andre (Bingham, Maine) with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Marqus Blakely (Metuchen, New Jersey) led the Catamounts with 29 points and nine rebounds.

The Black Bears fell behind by 10 points with a little more than six minutes to go in the half, but got right back in the game with an 11-to-seven run to close the lead to three going into the lockerroom. Andre led Maine in the first half with 12 points and four rebounds, while Blakely finished with 13 points and five rebounds in the first 20 minutes. Kaimondre Owes (Brooklyn, New York) pitched in with five points, three rebounds and two assists in the first stanza.

Maine shot 41 percent from the field in the first half to Vermont's 37 percent. The Black Bears were out-rebounded by three, 18-to-15. Maine's bench came alive in the first half however, with Owes and Andre leading the charge to out-gain the Vermont bench by a 17-to-seven margin.

The Black Bears came out hard in the second half, and took a two-point lead when Vermont guard Mike Trimboli (Norwalk, Conn.) was whistled for a technical foul, and Mark Socoby (Houlton, Maine) made the free throws. Vermont then went on a 12-to-one run to take a nine point lead. Maine battled hard, but Blakely had his shot on, and made seven-of-nine shots in the second half to allow the Catamounts to pull away.

For the game, Maine shot 38 percent on 17-of-45 shooting, while Vermont shot the ball very well, going 29-for-57. Maine was out-rebounded 38-to-29.

Owes finished with 12 points and three rebounds while Socoby finished with 11 points and four rebounds. Trimboli finished with 12 points, five rebounds and five assists.
