Jan. 21, 2008
ORONO, Maine- The men's basketball team dropped a tough game Monday night by the score of 76-71. With the win, Hartford improved to 9-11 and 3-2 in America East. Maine fell to 5-13 and 1-4 with the loss. Maine was led by Kaimondre Owes (Brooklyn, New York) who had 19 points and five rebounds. Joe Zeglinksi (Philadelphia, PA) led Hartford with 28 points. The game got off to a tight start, as it was eight-to-eight through the first six minutes of action. Malachi Peay (Queens, New York) insured the Hawks would not get a lead when he dove and interceptred a pass. Peay tried to go the other way but was promptly fouled. Maine proceeded to go on a 10-to-three run capped by a Kaimondre Owes' (Brooklyn, New York) three-pointer to take a seven point lead. Hartford battled back and closed the gap to only four points, and it appeared it would go into the lockerroom that way when Maine missed a couple shots with seconds remaining. However, Junior Bernal (Manhattan, New York) got a rebound with two seconds remaing and made a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Black Bears a seven-point lead at halftime. Bernal led all scorers in the first 20 minutes with 14 points, and added three rebounds. Owes ended up with 10 points in the first half and also added three rebounds and two assists. Peay had nine points and three rebounds in a very active half for the freshman. For the half, Maine shot 41 percent from the field, including going five-for-seven from beyond the arc. The Black Bears out-rebounded the Hawks by a 20-to-17 margin. Zeglinski had nine points to lead the Hawks in the first stanza. Hartford shot 42 percent from the field, but only went five-of-15 from three-point range. Maine scored the first six points of the second half to take a 13-point lead. The Hawks battled back, and got to within five points on a Michael Turner (Novato, California) basket. Maine responded right away when Sean McNally (Gardiner, Maine) made a layup just moments after hitting the floor hard going up for a rebound.
Maine kept battling, but the Hawks tied the game at 48 with 10 minutes to go in the game on a Zeglinski jumper from the free throw area. The Zeglinski basket capped a 19-to-six run for the Hawks. The Black Bears answered, but Zeglinski came down and made a three-pointer to give the Hawks a one point lead with just under nine minutes to go. The teams continued to trade baskets until the Hawks took a three-point lead with just under a minute left. Owes proceeded to make two free throws to pull Maine within one point with 31 seconds left in the game. The Black Bears fouled, and were down by three points with 23 seconds left after Jaret Von Rosenberg (Mission, TX) made two free throws for the Hawks. Maine came back down and just missed a three-pointer, and the Hawks made two more free throws to put the game just out of reach for the Black Bears. For the game, Maine out-rebounded the Hawks by a 38-to-32 margin. Maine went 22-for-54 from the field to Hartford's 25-for-49.
