Men's Basketball Falls to Boston University 66-55

ORONO, Maine-- The University of Maine men's basketball team saw its five-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday night when it fell to Boston University 66-55 at Alfond Arena in Orono. Maine falls to 10-12 on the season and 5-5 in America East play with the loss, while Boston University improves to 8-12 overall and 5-3 in conference play.

Chris Bruff (Bloomfield, Conn.) was named the America East Player of the Game for Maine. He had 11 points, six rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block. Tyler Morris was named the America East Player of the Game for Boston University. He finished with a game-high 19 points. He also had four rebounds, two assists and one steal for the Terriers.

Maine jumped out to an early 8-2 lead. Olli Ahvenniemi (Vaasa, Finland) and Chris Bruff each had four early points for the Black Bears. Omari Peterkin led Boston University as he scored the first four points for the Terriers. Boston University drained back-to-back three-point field goals to take a 14-10 lead with 12:26 remaining in the first half. Philippe Tchekane Bofia (Yaounde, Cameroon) stopped the BU run with a three-point field goal from the top of the key just 20 seconds later.

The Black Bears used a 13-0 run to take a 23-14 lead. Tchekane Bofia had seven points during the run, while Jon Sheets (Grass Valley, Calif.) had five. Boston University stopped the Maine run when Scott Brittain scored a conventional three-point play. The Terriers then scored nine straight to tie the game at 23-23, before Jon Sheets answered with a three-point field goal. Brittain then hit a trey of his own to tie the game once again.

Tchekane Bofia scored a traditional three-point play with just three seconds remaining in the half and Maine took a 35-33 lead into intermission.

 

 

Tchekane Bofia led Maine with 10 points in the first half, while Sheets chipped in with seven. Maine shot 48.4 percent in the first half.

Boston University was led by Tyler Morris who had nine points, while Peterkin and Brittain each had eight in the first half. BU shot 40.9 percent in the first half.

Maine used a 7-2 run to open the second half to take a 42-35 lead. Boston University answered with a 23-3 run to take a 58-45 lead with over under four minutes to play in the game. Mark Socoby (Houlton, Maine) ended the BU run with a jumper with 3:49 remaining in the game. Maine cut the deficit to eight points with a traditional three-point play by Ahvenniemi, but BU answered with eight straight points to take a 66-50 lead with 1:40 remaining.

Tchekane Bofia led Maine with 12 points. Bruff added 11 points, six rebounds, three assists, two steals and one blocks. Ahvenniemi scored a season-high nine points in the game for the Black Bears.

Morris scored 19 points and grabbed four rebounds for BU. Carlos Strong added 15 points, while Scott Brittain chipped in with 13 points and five rebounds.

Maine returns to action on Saturday, February 3 when it travels to New Hampshire for a 3:00 pm game with the Wildcats. The Black Bears return home when they face defending America East Champion Albany on Wednesday, February 7 at 7:30 pm.
