Men's Basketball Downs New Hampshire 65-56
Feb. 3, 2007 DURHAM, N.H.--The University of Maine men's basketball team defeated New Hampshire 65-56 on Saturday afternoon in Durham, N.H. It was the sixth win for the Black Bears in their last seven games. Maine improves to 11-12 on the season and 6-5 in America East play. New Hampshire falls to 8-16 overall and 4-7 in conference play. Kevin Reed (Yarmouth, Mass.) was named the America East Player of the Game for Maine. He finished with 15 points and eight rebounds. Jermaine Anderson was named the America East Player of the Game for New Hampshire. He had 19 points for the Wildcats. Maine jumped out to a 17-13 lead with 11:28 remaining in the first half. Kevin Reed (Yarmouth, Mass.) led Maine early with six points. The Black Bears used a 10-0 run to extend their lead to 25-13 with 7:54 remaining in the half. Chris Bruff (Bloomfield, Conn.) had a pair of hoops for Maine during the run while Reed and Jon Sheets (Grass Valley, Calif.) each had a three-point field goal. UNH's Jermaine Anderson stopped the run with a three-point field goal with 7:31 remaining in the half for the Wildcats. He then hit a second trey and UNH pulled to within six points at 25-19. Sheets stopped the UNH charge with a jumper in the lane with just under 4:30 remaining in the half. The Black Bears scored three straight points to end the half and take a 30-22 lead into intermission. Reed led Maine with nine points in the first half, while Sheets chipped in with eight. Six different Black Bears scored points for Maine in the first half. Bruff pulled down seven rebound in the first-half for Maine, while Jordan Cook (Hampden, Maine) came off the bench to grab four rebounds. Maine shot 46.4 percent in the first half, connecting on 13-of-28 shots. The Black Bears limited UNH to a 26.7 field goal percentage in the first half as it connected on just eight of 30 shots.
UNH's Blagoj Janev hit back-to-back three-point field goals early in the second half and UNH pulled to within two points at 34-32. Maine responded and pushed its lead to 44-37 with 13:40 left in the game. The Wildcats continued to put the pressure on Maine and once again, pulled to within two points with 12:00 minutes remaining Maine then rolled off 13 straight points to build its lead to a game-high 15 points at 57-42. Anderson stopped the Maine run with a layup at 5:43. Maine held UNH scoreless for a 6:20 span. UNH made a run at the end of the game and pulled to within seven points at 61-54, but that is as close as it would get. Sheets led three Maine scorers in double figures. He finished with 16 points. Reed added 15 points, while Junior Bernal (Manhattan, N.Y.) chipped in with 12 points. Bernal scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half. Chris Bruff pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds in the victory. Maine returns to action on Wednesday, February 7 when hosts America East defending champion Albany at 7:30 p.m. at Alfond Arena in Orono. It will be an America East televised game.
